Checking a distributor

Hello

I have the opportunity to buy a distributor (bosch 022) to replace the current VW thats on the car and that is obvioiusly no good for anything other than moving the car in the workshop.

The seller bought it from VintageWerks, it has been rebuilt by them apparently.

Is there anything i can check visually on it apart from fitting it to the car ?

Thanks

What are you trying to ascertain?
Does it spin?
Do the advance / retard springs move freely?
Can you hold the rotor and move the distributor mounting shaft back and forth to see the springs move freely? Does the points mounting area look worn?
Not much else to check manually. The rest is "post install"
Good luck!

Yeah of course it's only by trying the part that I'll know, but was wondering if there were some tell tale details that could be seen.
Will have a look at the points you said, but going by the photos, it seems that it has indeed been rebuilt, not just rattle canned.

580 bucks is the asking price, bought but never fitted. Not sure I can get a used one and then get it rebuilt for that kind of money ?

there are swap meets coming up.
One in PA in April
One in N. Cal. in June.

What is I. Your car now? 009? 050? Might also look for an 031. $580 is less than they charge plus they require a core and shipping.

If my memory serves me well I have a 009 on it ? It's definitely not a Porsche item.

US swap meets are going to be hard to get to because I live in france.

No prices on the vintagewerks website, but there is a reputable porsche distributor specialist here in france and he said it would be around 450-500 €uros for parts and labor.

This seems to be an ok deal for this Werks rebuilt one provided job was done properly :D

Hi.
Maybe your specialist can rebuild your 009 to 022 / 031 specs to save you some Euros?

Ivory 912 04-04-2017 01:56 PM

Ah yeah I think I've heard that being done. I'll need to check with him if he feels like doing it.
On the other hand my car isn't exactly 100% but it might be good to keep some details in factory form

To each his own.
But.... that is not going to impact the "originality" much if at all, because you can switch it back with no cutting / welding / painting. = no harm-no foul.
