Distributor
Hello friends
![]() My car has a 050 distributor (Brasil) - and this distributor needs some tuning/repare. I can get the spare parts. However, I have studied some earlier discussions here dealing with alternative 912 distributors and have realized that it is a rather subjective discussion. I would like to hear about some objective alternatives re 912 distributors. Looking forward.... ![]() Palle |

050 is not a bad choice; however, original 912 distributors tend to work the best with stock engines. 009's (especially the junk being manufactured now and sold as 'sport' distributors) do not work well on 616 motors. On modified motors (big bore, cam), one choice is an RS0012: this is a recurved 009 done by John Benton. I have had two German 009's done by Benton and I have no complaints. There is a lot of distributor info to be found on the 912 BBS, especially by posters Glenn Ring, Bruce Smith and Mike Horton.

Thanks for the comments and suggestion. First step will be to restore the 050.

The 050 is rather a poor choice, a stop gap at best. The curves are for a VW type engine. You will never get the performance out of a 912 engine with a 050. The 009 is another one designed for the VW. However, the curve will allow modified engines to run at higher RPM.
Living in Danmark, you should be able to find one of the 912 curved dist. the 020, 031, and 061. The RS00912 is a recurved 009 the works very well on the 912 engine. However, it is recurved in the US and is probably not available in the European market I doubt you will be very happy with a 050. Especially, if you have ever driven a sorted out proper 912. I have two German made 050's I use as paper weights. ![]() |

Ups - was sent too swiftly.
I think I will try and find one of the original distributors for the 912. Probably it will be rather expensive. Let´s see. |

What # distributor are you in search of?
061? 022? I may have it. Peter |

The are three types of the 031 Dist. The first two types 1 and 2 are the German made ones and are the ones that you will want the third type or type 3 is a poor substitute and should be avoided. The was only one type of the 020 and the 061 was a US substitute for the 031.

I have forgotten. You can tell the difference between them. The type three will be more rounded at the base. Whereas the types 1 and 2 will have a sharp edge to the base. The one in the picture is a type 2. I couldn't fine a picture of the Type 3. However, there seem to be several 031 for sale.
I have two of Don Mark's massaged 031, one in the car the other in a drawer, NFS. ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for all the knowledge you all are giving here. Very interesting.
I would like to quote Duane Spencer: "Do yourself a favor and get a 031 or 050 by Bosch, and your engine will love it". However, re the 0231 129 022 Spencer says: "This is also a good distributor for a relatively stock engine". And Peter - of course it would be nice to try the 022. I live, however, in Denmark. May be a "problem" or....? Eventually, you could give me your offer/price directly. Palle |

Guess I should have looked in the garage. I remember Don saying about the bottom edge being the different on #3. Both of mine have "Made in Germany". One is clearly the third version.

John,
I am pretty sure the one on the right is the Type 3. The one on the left is a type 1. |

Looks like finding a #2 will solve the mystery.

I have a type 2 on my car. There was very little difference between type 1 and type 2.
