Carpet dyeing

Has anyone attempted to redye their carpet? I am thinking of dyeing mine, same color, black. It needs some rejuvenating, looks washed out in areas. It is in good shape needs to be redyed.

What products(s) have you used and recommend? Where can I buy it?

Thanks

Way back long ago when I was in the Navy we used to redye our dungarees(whole lot cheaper than buying new ones). We used a dye(don't remember the brand) that we got at Wal-Mart...just throw in a load of whatever you wanted to dye in the washer at the local washateria, dump in the dye...voila...fresh blue dungies. Of course the washateria would be extremely mad...seems the dye works pretty well for about five loads...oops.

Thanks for the info. I'll bet the dye was "All-Purpose Ritt Dye" or something like that....

I was thinking of dyeing it in place with a spray can of dye. I have seen a web site of a similiar spray product when I did a search. There are also franchises that specialize in automotive carpet dyeing & restoration that use tank (garden)sprayers.

I think the "Perlon" carpeting is a wool ( natural) product that should be able to be dyed.

i used duplicoats? black spray dye with very satisfying results. ferd huergas commented on my new carpets when it was done which was a huge complement considering his award winning RS replica. i have some before and after pics if you are interested.

Bob:
I would like to see your before & after picts if not too much trouble. Is Duplicoat Dye any relation to Duplicolor Touch Up Paint? If so it should be readily available.

You have a 68L? I had one too a 1968 911L with Sortomatic transmission factory A/C. I bought mine from Brent Mussburger the sports announcer when he lived in Glenview IL. Had to sell it when the family arrived.

later,
Ron

i'm still at work but will scan the images when i get home. i still have a can so i will also double ck the exact name brand and color.

just curious, after owning a SWB did you purposely set out to buy a LWB? differences in handling?

these pics are really outdated considering what has been done to the interior.

the flash is really washing out the images but the black is dark and rich. the original carpets were in decent shape except for the fading. i simply steam cleaned them without chemicals and masked off certain areas and sprayed 2-3 coats with DUPLI•COLOR vinyl and fabric color - flat black. it took 2 cans. keep the can for touch ups. wear the proper mask.

the positives: looks real good, saved lots of money, looks like a 2-5 year old carpet

the negatives: kinduv "crunchy" feeling carpet, will wear to orig carpet color if rubbed enough (gas pedal area), doesn't look brand new

if your carpet is in decent shape you can get away with this as a temporary solution (2 years for me so far). the floormats will wear quick unless protected. i have since installed an original rubber mat set. plan to install an RS carpet kit someday but have opted to spend my money elsewhere on the interior in the meantime.

here are the most recent pics of my interior:

any questions on how to be a cheap bastard contact me. hope this helps.

Thanks for the pics. The before & after look great, thanks. I will give it a try!

I attended an Auto Detailing Class at our local Park District last night and the instructor also recommended Dupli-Color Fabric Dye.

Plan to pick up a couple of cans this weekend.

To answer your question of SWB vs. LWB. I always had trouble getting the 68 911 engine to run good, lots of popping & spitting. Did not like the Sportomatic and I could not ever get the carbs adjusted properly. After I pulled the engine and trans to replace the throwout bearing I decided it was too costly to maintain so I sold it. The only car I have ever owned that I made money on!

Thirty years later I decided to give it another try and decided to buy a Porsche I could afford to maintain (912). It just happened the car was a 69 Targa. Great shape at a fair price. If it was a SWB car and the same condition I would have bought it as well. I have been very happy with my choice and have enjoyed every minute of working on it. There is a big difference in working on a car for pleasure vs. working to make it just run.
