serial # on block
I just bought a 912 short/long block, meaning a few things were missing from a compete engine so here it goes,
the serial numbeers I found on the block are *P*4096797* I was hoping to find out what year it was , a block now in good shape is the main thing for me as my car smokes now and is in need of a tune/rebuild job which I can handle. and I was also hoping for a set of rings for a set of 86 NPR big bores I have, any ideas. I will call shasta eng, on Mon as it is Sunday now SmileWavy |
The engine should be from a 69 912 coupe.

thanks I was thinking that , or on thoses lines as the heads have holes with small tubes runing out of the top , this would indicate a 68 or 69 smog motor thanks for the help timmy in sunny Las Vegas Nevada:D

I think that only 68 had the ill conceved air injection system. 69 heads have a flat spot without cooling fins where the injection ports were deleted. The oil cooler seals and mount are improved on the 69. The 69 cooler was soft mounted to lessen the case failures at the cooler base. The S# is on a part that can be changed from motor to motor when rebuilt but there are some ways to decode the year and date of most of the cast parts of the motor.

right it seems it is a 68 heads they came seperate from the motor in the shipping ,now what do you think about welding up the holes ,as I have a TIG set up here at home and weld aluminum and stainless at work I think i can do a excellent job , and do the holes go any where ,do they need welding I weld up a lot of cases for Motorcycles and they have a good aluminum content what about 912 heads? alum or magnesiun? any way I can do it thanks for the info on the motor I am getting ready to build a aluminum shroud for it to match the 911 fan, housing and such if you are intrested in the finished product call me back in a month on the net ,this is the sand dune season so I will take my time quads come first in this weather ha ha ha thanks for the help
