Front strut insert removal
Can somebody tell me how to get the cap off the strut so I can replace the insert.

There is a special tool but I've used a big pipe wrench with success.

I assume you are talking about the gland nut that sits atop the strut tube...
IIRC, there are two types: pin (two depressions in the top of the nut) and slots (4 - a slot at each 90*). Either type can be removed with the proper tool (Bilstein used to include the tool with their inserts: I don't know if this is still true); a BF pipe wrench can be used with success but will mar the gland nut. As Chris alludes, there are two types of struts: Koni and Boge: they are different and require their own type of strut insert, gland nut. Insert instructions often mention adding oil to the strut tube: oil aids in heat transfer and is necessary... Peter |

Ok, I used a Big Ass Monkey wrench and got it off. I want to buys new ones from our host. I don't see any ID marks on it. No numbers on the insert. How do I ID it

I guess I'm too late but I'll post pictures of what I use for Koni's. I bought this tool from Granger I think. It's been awhile.
