Emergency trunk release 912e
 

Hi everyone!

I have got a problem with opening the trunk on my 912E.
The cable is broken and I'm not aware if there's an emergency trunk release for the 912e.
Do any of you know what I can do to release the hood?
Any help would be appreciated.

Through model year 1973, Porsche used a latch system that would unlatch automatically (if properly adjusted) if the cable broke for either the hood or the deck lid. I cannot see that even with a latch design change, Porsche would not have kept the same 'broken cable - unlatch' philosophy.

I would try applying pressure on the hood over the latch mechanism to release any tension that may be holding the hood latched. If that fails to get results, post a question on the 912 BBS 912E section. It is free to join the 912 BBS. On the later "smile bumper" cars (74 through the SC's which includes the 912E) it's more difficult unless you get lucky and the latch will pop open.
Here is the official way of doing it along with a photo of the factory measurements:

1.) Remove the front bumper and drill a hole 5/16 in (8mm) diameter in the front transverse panel (see below photo.)

2.) Make up a wire hook from a 15in. (400mm) length of stell rod approximately 3/16in (5mm) diameter. Insert the rod through the hole and press the wire clamping to the right.

3.) After installing a new cable, plug the hole with Porsche part: plug; 999.703.044.50 which is available from Porsche dealers specifically for this purpose.)

4.) Install front bumper.

you might want to add an emergency pull to both the front and rear units. its cheap insurance
