Have that flywheel balanced with the PP and lightened a bit. Made a world of difference to the throttle response of mine. That and an 050 dizzy.

I did the same thing with my crusty HE's too. Bursch makes thermal reactor bypass pipes you should consider unless you already have a set.

Thanks for the tips, I will consider getting it balanced. In retrospect I should have had this flywheel turned but there were so many little side projects I was doing all at the same time I just lost track of those little details.

I have a really clean set of heat exchangers, thermal reactor bypass tubes and a Bursch muffler to install.... In a perfect world I would jet hot or cerakote all these but I can't let this project $ tab run wild! I think since the exhaust will be easily removable now (no rusty nut nubs) that I will get experiment with some high temp paints and if it just flakes off I'll get all of it coated over the winter.

engine and trans mated, getting bogged down by stopping to clean and paint things I forgot that I had boxed and stashed away after I removed the engine. Next up is the fan shroud install and nice clean tin. It's amazing how that rough case of the trans just clings to dirt and grime. It's 10 times cleaner than it was but still looks dirty.

What distributor do you plan to use?

ryans65 07-02-2019 05:03 AM

Just the stock distributor, 060 I think?

If you're going to run carbs, do some homework on all the various distributor considerations. There is a lot of info on this. Key considerations include whether/how to run any vac advance, what camshaft you're using, and what sort of fuel you intend to run. The latter relates to how compression is set up too. I'm by no means an expert but I'll tell you that having a suitable and dialed-in distributor makes a mountain of difference in how much fun the Type 4 motor is.

Ill be running fuel injection, it worked great prior to pulling the engine for the refresh.

david c. 07-02-2019 06:05 AM

Well then ignore my comment! Haha.

When will it be up and running?

ryans65 07-02-2019 06:48 AM

ha!

Engine will be in this weekend, should be running by next weekend. I am really just taking my time and replacing everything that has been neglected so I can put some real miles on it when its done!

Good progress so far.

Ryan, as long as you are in there, is it possible to remove the fan shroud without removing the heat exchangers?
I had the motor mounts and fan belt replaced, and the shop has run into all sorts of problems because they 'had to' remove the heat exchangers.

FWIW, I recommend replacing the motor mounts while you're in there.

You should be able to pull the fan shroud without pulling the heat exchangers, they have a little plate on top with two screws that allows the snout that feeds the air into them to come out from the top on each side. Of course the fan front engine tin and so on would have to be removed also.

I have a new set of engine mounts, both of mine were split in half!

Engine all dressed up minus smog stuff. Unfortunately my thermal reactor bypass tubes I bought were wrong so I'm looking for a pair.

Unless you bought a set for a 911, how could they be wrong? The 912E was the only 4-cylinder motor that was routed through thermal reactors.

Bursch still makes them, and I think they keep them in stock.

Might take a couple of tries to get to talk to an actual person. They will direct you to a local distributor or retailer.

There's a photo of them laying next to my flywheel a few posts back, the ones I got make an abrupt turn and won't go on without contacting the pushrod tubes. It's my fault, I didn't compare them to my old ones before ordering. I'll call Bursch, I didn't see them on their website but I guess that doesn't mean they don't make them any longer.

Those look like they have been modified big time.

Ryan, did you get your clutch package yet?

I figured they were hacked. I swear this is the third item I've bought on the classifieds that has been misrepresented in some way but its always buyer beware with that kind of stuff. Last surprise was a taillamp housing that the double filament bulb circuit thing was held in with a huge gob of bondo. Unreal.

I did get a clutch kit, actually ended up scoring one on rock auto with the correct throwout bearing. It was a rebranded sachs kit in the box. Yours is a good deal for someone, I have a used throwout bearing that could sweeten that deal. As-is though!
