1966 912
In the first picture, it looks like the 1969 or later heat/ventilation controls have been installed in the dash. The early 911/912s (up to 1968) had a very simple heating system with no fresh air blower. The 1969 and later cars had a blower behind the dash accessable from the trunk and sliding controls on the dash.

perhaps pic 2 is related to pic 1. As oldie44 indicates, those heater controls are not original to a 66. it just had a lever under the speedo and a handle next to the hand brake (that seems to be missing). perhaps a blower from a later car was installed and it needed that relay setup to work.
No clue on rear bulkhead. Looks like you have later gauges installed as well, and the radio cutout was enlarged at one point? Last edited by CASair; 10-30-2017 at 07:48 AM.. |

Marilyn,
The '65-'67 had the heater lever in front of the shifter. At least we've finally found something stock on your car! I should be able to take some pictures of the early dash mounting points tomorrow.

I presume you are restoring the 912 to original condition.
The original heating system had air control valves left and right next to the transmission. They were operated by wires connected to the lever in front of the shift console. If you pulled up the lever, the valves opened and fed hot air from the engine heat exchangers into tubes in the longitudinals. The hot air was then distributed to the windshield vent for defrosting. You could take some of the hot air into the car for heating by opening the sliding vent covers on the inner side of the longitudinals. Primitative but it actually worked pretty well. The fresh air system was completely independent of the heating system. When you were moving, air forced into the vent above the hood was fed into the interior windshield vents. The lever above the speedometer regulated the air flow. Not much air flow for hot climates. |

Here's what the heat vent sliders look like that go under the doors (over the oval cutout). They should be unpainted metal but the PO painted them black.

Thanks -
Oldie 44 - not returning to stock, but instead adding some basic comfort features like radio, heat and air. Currently outfitted as a track car. Tony V - thank you - as always you are on pointe and ever helpful.

The round indent is just where the rear torsion bar is attached to the body. Serves no purpose inside the cabin.

Thanks Iowa! You are the first person to explain the round indents.

Any chance you have a photo of the attachment mechanism for the ashtray? I have an ashtray, just can't figure out how it attaches, nothing in car where it should go.

Hi.
It's two pieces. bracket and ashtray. The ugly adhesive shelf paper on the bracket faces up and attaches to the dash with screws. The Ashtray slides and clips in, viola! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

You're welcome for the pics, I've followed your progress on the '66 and admire your tenacity and motivation!
No,2 pieces. The circled part IS the bracket,my pics weren't clear to show that. I put them together to show a complete example. |

Thank you Peter L. My dash is so chopped that even with the bracket now sourced from 912 BBS (thank you Peter G) I need to configure a way to mount the bracket. Channelling McKyver.
