What can you tell me of this 912?
 
This has been for sale for a while now and I'm awfully tempted to buy it.

It has a replacement engine but owner doesn't know anything about it, nor its history. He's an importer of classic porsche in bulk. Unfortunately too far for me to pop and have a drive.

I'm an old school Porsche noob, I own a 996t but hoping to sell it for something a little more thrilling to drive on our slower roads.

The car in question is a Conda Green (originally white) 1968 SWB 1968 912.

Please tell me anything you can spot! Even better if you know the car. Thanks.

The car is for sale for approx 35k USD. It would have likely sold for 25k-30k here before being shipped.

It has a PCA sticker 2008 so I assume it was seen by people at meets and shows at some point!

Engine number is in the range for a 1966 912
Range is 744211-750001
So engine is not original as you mentioned.

The obvious things to note are -
Incorrect seats
Incorrect headlights
Incorrect decklid
Incorrect door panels

I think that's the correct side view mirror (large durant mirror)

However all this is easily changed if you wanted to.

You really need to check for rust, check-
Floorboards
Pedal area
Front suspension area
Rear parcel
Rear seat bottoms

-pretty much the whole bottom of the car needs to be checked for rust. Rust Repair gets expensive (ask me how I know)

Also check the bottom corners of the windshield and rear glass.

I think that the 1968 front suspension is an odd combination of parts since they were transitioning to the 1969 suspension and longer wheelbase.

Car does photograph well- looks good but should be checked out.

The 912 engines are pretty reliable but parts can be expensive.
I have been out of the market for a while but in my opinion $35k seems like a lot for a non matching engine 912. You can look at 911SCs for that kind of money. Car looks good- just lower it a little bit if you get it :)

The owner seemed to think the engine was a more powerful upgrade, so thank you for clarifying that.

He claims there's no rust on the underside or usual areas.. Of course I'll check that myself... I own a 1972 Datsun 240z, so I know a bit about the expense and hassle of rust repair :P

What would this car go for typically over in the US?

So- I'm embarrassed to say that I looked around in the 912bbs for sale site and it seems that this car's price might not be as far off as I first thought but for me I would think that $35k would be a good price for a car that was more original. As for a price- i can't even say- the Porsche market has been crazy the last several years.

I just sold a '66 that was far more stock and had a nicely upgraded low-mileage motor. Price was $35K US. This car has had quite a bit of changes, but if done properly, it looks like it could be a fun car.

Many thanks for you both.. So 35k isn't an unfair price for this? What would be considered cheap? The prices for air cooled porsches are so hard for me to gauge...

The car looks like a nice driver from the pictures. The real question is what does it look like underneath? What's under the paint? Is this a lipstick on a pig, or is it this nice throughout the car? If the whole car is this nice, it's a fair price. If it has a 1/4 inch of body filler in places under the paint, or rust in the pans, rockers, heater tubes, the bottom of the front or rear windows,or a tired engine, suspension bushings, etc, you could easily spend thousands fixing what's not in the pictures.
I read a UK magazine called Classic Porsche. There are several very fine shops in your country. My advice is take the car to one of them and get a pre purchase inspection. It could be a very fine car or a real nightmare.
Good luck in your search. A very nice 912 is a real gem indeed.

The car shows beautifully. Besides what others have pointed out, it's missing the distinctive side markers. The front and rear valances are also incorrect for a '68, but do look nice on that particular car. Those headlights look like H-1's and they look in good condition. They provide much improved lighting and are rather expensive, to boot. As others have said, be sure there's as little rust as you're willing to deal with, and repair. That badge looks like it is from the Mt. Kisco Police Benevolent Association, which is in New York State, just north of NYC, which means if the car was used in the winter, it has rust. Check under it with a something sharp to poke at the undercoating, which may be hiding some surprises. As for the color, it's wonderful, but of course, that's just my opinion, which isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Good luck with it, if you decide to go forward.

If it's a nice driver it's worth the price. If it was a perfect concourse car it would be at least twice the price.
My friend just paid $50K for a 69 912 that had 52000 miles and I stripped the car and we are taking it back to the original color. It came out of media blasting yesterday. It has ZERO rust. He will have 6 figures in the car.

Many thanks to both for your responses. I've decided to give it a miss. I think i'll stretch my budget and look and try and get a 911, ideally a back dated 964 or something
