912E,oil in front struts

Finally replaced the problematic (and stuck)front shocks.Koni´s were shot, offering no resistance against movement.BOGE´s are in now, hopefully improving the ride. When inserting the new ones , I noticed there was oil in the struts.Plenty of it.Did that leak from old KONI´s or is the strut ment to be filled with oil?The repair manuals I have don´t mention this.

If I remember correctly, there's a little oil in the strut housing. I think it was to prevent corrosion. I really don't remember.

if there was a LOT of oil, move the strut cartridge you removed in and out...oil should squirt out somewhere if there's a crack or it's leaking

Well , some oil ( a lot! ) came out when I pushed in the new BOGE inserts. And naturally I WAS NOT prepared for this.... oil ended up on my front brakes , rotors and pads. I think I have ABS brakes now ! Are they completely gone now ? Or just in need of proper cleaning? And I could not get the oil out , so rest of it remains in.

sounds like whoever replaced the original Boges with the Koni inserts didn't clean out the fluid like he should have. I would suggest some old t-shirts and a few extra minutes to clean that out properly.

Good luck!

I spoke with an old veteran (Porsche factory trained in the early 60's) re: front struts on my '69. His recommendation was to pour some auto. trans. fluid into the tube when replacing the cartridge. Not too much. Don't want it coming back out.

The purpose of the fluid is to dissipate heat.

Thanks for that timely tip on the front struts as I am about to do mine on my 69.

Thanks for the info Craig. A tip from Jeff Trask sent me to the PNW 912 board just minutes ago. Keep spreading the word and...
