need a motor rebuild or replacement
1 Attachment(s)
Well, seems like my car is tellling me something.
It leaks oil really really bad and also seems to have some issue with Blow By. This thing doesn't have the power I thought it would and I'm guessing that the compression is low. So, whats my best options for a rebuild or replacement. I am poor and really can't afford this but I love the car. so what do you suggest, fix it or sell it. If the answer is fix it, help a buddy out with the scoop on the cheapest parts. Anyone have a used engine for a 1967 912 ????? -=A=- |
oh yeah forgot

I also need a passenger side floor patch panel and a wiper
motor. Other than that the car is cool...... -=A=- |
My advise would be... get that compression test done first and post up the results.
Check this: http://www.hillmanimages.com/912/compression.html The oil leaks could be a number of things. one thing at a time David |
Thats a good looking car,I would'nt sell it,and if you can't afford to rebuild it right now,the cheapest way out is to pull the motor out,set it aside for now till you get some $ to do it right, and pickup a nice VW engine, stick it in there and still be able to drive while you fix:D

That looks like a nice 912.
It a shame your not in England Allan my friend has 2, well actually 2 and a half. I would make sure you know the condition of yours before making any decisions. As David suggests do a compression test first. Are there any other 912 guys in your area which can come take a look? Alan.UK |
I won't volunteer anyone, but we do have a couple guys in your vicinity who might be able to have a look see.
Lone Star 912 If the valves are properly adjusted and you have poor compression, you probably need to dig in. Unless I am mistaken, that car recently came from California, but I am unsure if Chuck drove it or transported it, if memory serves that one was transported. If you have compression, oil leaks can be easy or hard. Mine had a really bad sump gasket causing a steady drip. Cost: $3.00 and an oil change. If you have stuff (fluid) coming out your tailpipe, only at startup, it could be moisture, which is pretty normal. Start checking stuff out, keep us posted, and we'll figure out where you're at. Allan,
Email me...I have the compression tester and a good timing light and lots 'o other goodies...I'm right here in Dallas and will be more than happy to give it a look see...I'd bet there's nothing major wrong...just valves, carbs, and other minor stuff...we'll get you on the road to enjoying that thing. Kevin |
Well done Kevin, the 912 community salutes you.

Thanks for all the help you guys. I really want to keep this car,
as I think it looks great. I would love to drive it down to the meet but not sure about the long freeway drive. |
Go to U Haul, get a 2 wheel trailer, and haul it down behind the S10. Get here early Saturday and we can all have a look at it and help you make a decision / discuss your options. I am sure Kevin, Troy, David, me, and the rest of the gang can sort it out for you- we'll put it in my garage and do exploritory surgery...
Keep Hope! Morrie |
Now that sounds like an idea, it runs and drives, just not much power, and leaks oil pretty bad
the oil leak is biggest prob on a long drive |
Allan,
These things are like Harleys...the oil leaks are a designed in feature to let you know that you have oil...no need to worry until it stops leaking. Just kidding, but I imagine all of our engines leak to some degree. Like Morrie said if you want to haul it down that'd be cool...give us a guinea pig to play with!! If you want to try to drive it down just let me know...we'll check it out and make sure there's nothing major wrong and caravan down in case of problems. |
hey, oil is cheap! just stop every 1/2 hour and fill-er up! If you get lost driving back home, you can just follow your trail. :)
|
So says the guy with the really nice 912.... If you get close, Clay and I can come pull you in with the Jeep!
Morrie |
Well, I drove the car today, and man, that thing is smoking like a
freight train. Guess what I really need is a new set of piston and cyls. Maybe some work to the heads. Grrrr... -=A=- |
Guessing What. !!!!!!!!
Stop guessing andfind the problem. 912 group is willing to help you find the problem. Very good people on this board willing to help you in Your AREA. SO you might need a seal, your ready to put a VW motor in it. STOP, have morrie come over and see what he says. Keep the Porshce 912 Motor Faith Brett |
 Sorry to hear your 12 is giving you greif, having had someone look after my Porsche's over the years I did not take to much notice about the oily bits but now I have to get involved. As the guy is no longer with us. But really it can be a nightmare I have loved the uphill learning curve.
You have people wanting to help you out take it. It may be a small problem. My Speedster had a big oil leak when I started looking and cleaning it I found the Oil filter pipe had a copper washer that had tracked across and was leaking oil big time I cleaned the lot replaced all the washers and problem fixed. Having read up about the engines alot ( Harry Pellow vids are a great tool ) you can end up with a full rebuild on your hands but you can save money along the way. Do it to last. 1 I would get the car to the members who want to help 2 You can put a VW engine in for the short term 3 You can then in slow time sort your one out. I must admit I have a spare 12 engine and box because I have cars for it to fit in just in case. I have too much spares, so I shed a load of them a while back. Some nice 911S stuff but you can't keep it all.I mumble... look DON'T PANIC It will run again. It's a loverly looking car. 912UK M 69 912 65 912 RHD 57 Speedster 54 Bent screen 77 911 |
My 66 uses a quart every 300 miles. Push rod tubes and heater boxes are soaked with oil. The faster I drive the more it leaks and smells. I wired up the heater boxes for the winter to get some heat but my exhaust leaks are so bad the inside of the windshield has a light film of oil and I think I'm gasing myself. If I stop I have to pop the engine lid and start the thing with a wire. I hope to see you in Austin. DG
