tires

I just wanted to check the tires you guys recommend for autcross with some limited road driving.I currently run alloys with a set of cheap radial winter tires(POV installed)that have a unique way of simulating ice driving conditions in the summer.I'm looking for a lower profile tire that does not require a 2x4 for fender adjustment.Thanx in advance,Greg.

That's a toughie, if only because the sky's always the limit.

Most of your magazine recent-issues (Excellence, european car, etc.) have articles giving the latest specs for tires you're seeking. Us shadetree mechanics go with the most the wallet can handle.

If you're talking tire sizes, 205/60-15 or 205/50-15 is pretty-much the largest you'll fit within the confines of the 914's stock fender wells (we are talking about a 914, right?) without shaving a couple hundred miles off the tires every time you turn. With flairs grafted on and monster-wide rims? Again, the sky's the limit.

As for peformance and price, I don't think you can get any better than Pep boys ultra Z
I recently installed a set of 255/60/16z's on my vette. Total drive out was in the nieghborhood of $420-460 I don't remember. Road and track did a comparison between them and goodyear Z and they held up to everything only 1/10 to 3/10 seconds behind all this for about 1/4 of the price. FYI I love mine sticks to the road like glue even in rain.
