Found a 911 engine
 

I stopped by the local German auto wreckers in Boring today to see if there were any available parts. I found he has a 911 engine sitting on the floor. The only thing I could find on it for reference was that it is a 72 and has 148 cubic inches. Anybody know what this engine is as to size & HP?
I think his price is a bit high ($2000) but, then again, I have never priced them!

A 72 911 engine should be a 2.4L. Sounds pretty close on the CI, though the 148 figure sounds a little bit high.

The 'T' motor made about 130-140 HP. The 'E' motor made ~160 HP. The 'S' motor made 190 HP. All had MFI originally.

yup. 2.4 .what color was the shroud? my t shroud is yellow. someonelse will have to chime in on the other colors.

Way Too Much....unless the shroud is unpainted and red.

If I remember right the shroud is black w/yellow fan.

Unless the condition and history is well known to indicate a mechanically sound, running engine with no major mechanical problems, it should be considered a core engine.
If it has MFI, it is probably worth $1500 max unless you can see it run on a test stand. if it doesn't have the induction it is worth more like $1000.

If it has papers indicating a recent rebuild and comes with a warranty is could be worth two or three times that, much more if it's an S engine.
Offer him $2k is he will warrant the condition in writing. If he says no, run away.

This is a no warranty engine. The only thing he has done is a leak down which has shown one of the valves to be stuck open... so he says. I don't think I will pursue this due to no papers and history. I'm sure it would need a rebuild. I don't need another "Pig in a Poke"!

Yuppers, like JP says. Remember, it costs almost as much to properly rebuild a 2.4 liter six as it does to rebuild a 3.6

Yuppers, in other words that $2K engine could quickly become an $8K one, or worse. Best to buy one in known mileage/condition that you can check out (running) with your own eyes & ears. Or, at least is vouched-for by someone you "trust" and comes with recent leakdown and compression test results.

The 2.4T engine is fun... Not a whole lot of HP but not bad. I personally would want more displacement if I was going through all the trouble of a swap, but it's a lot better than a stock 2 liter 6.

There is nothing BETTER than a stock 2.0/4.

The price of engines is going up. If it is complete with the MFI and is at least an E (I don't think you're going to find many S's these days), you might consider it for a grand or better. Where are you going to get a turn key engine of that age? If it's verified as rebuilt properly, expect to pay north of $3000. I said properly, and with some miles on it at that.

There's nothing "wrong" with a 2.4 T motor. I liked the one I put in my car.....torquey. The guy I got it from paid 2400, but it was a runner.
Any motor in the condition described by Bruce is a core motor and should be priced accordingly. This one is not. Never pay more than you can part it out for....even that is a risk.
