Unhappy 914 A-Arm Replacement

Yesterday while (luckily) pulling into a parking lot in my '73 914-4 I heard a metallic sound, the car dropped to the ground & skidded to a stop. When I got out of the car to see what had happened I saw that the front left tire was at an angle & the front fender was damaged and resting on the tire. When I looked closer I could see that the A-Arm had cracked around the ball joint and had scrapped along the parking lot for a few feet. I had the car towed home. Now I want to repair my car with the best parts available. I would appreciate any & all suggestions.
Thanks,
Gary

Hummm. I've seen this happen. I reworked mine as a result.
That was the only option I could come up with......short of spending a whole pee pot full of money. I coulple of pics. ........

There is a spot on the arm just outboard of the lower doubler where the arm changes direction. I had small cracks leading into a weld on the inside of the arm.....just outboard of the ball joint. The metal got mighty thin . I have a spare set that wasn't as thin and here's another pic of one of them.

Thanks everybody for your input. The piss pot full of money kit looks awesome but expensive, so I just ordered the PP replacement a-arm. Any special tools I need other than a ball joint wrench?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary,

You will need to have a VERY good connection between the ball joint socket and the nut or it will slip and start rounding the corners.
What I do is align the socket and breaker bar to the nut and put my jack under it and lift up until the car just starts to lift. This keep enough pressure on the socket so it should not slip. If it looks like it is slipping you may have to reposition it. I put a block of wood on the jack head.

Is there a specific torque required when replacing the ball joint? Any special ball joint preparation. Grease? Lok-Tite, etc?
Thanks,
Gary

Sorry but - being a "newbie" I don't know squat about the E.R.B. suspension shown in "echocanyons" photo. But it looks expensive... Is there a website that I can drool over?
Thanks,
Gary

Anybody have experience with the PP a-arm replacement part available from their PP web site? Is it a genuine quality replacement part?
Thanks,
Gary

Is there a website that I could view to help with how to accomplish a complete front 914 a-arm replacement? I'm waitin' on new parts & only know how I got it apart. I believe I need any torque specs required during reassembly + any experience you could share.
Thanks,
Gary
