AAR Resistor
And a fine Sunday afternoon to you all!:)
Does anyone have a source for a small wire wound resistor that will fit into the ceramic cup of the AAR on my '73 2.0? I drove forty miles to a Radio shack today to look over their selection(limited), but they had nothing that would work. I have been considering the purchase of some Ni-Chrome wire to re-coil myself, but I'm pretty ignorant about what gauge and resistance value I would need... Any help in either direction would be appreciated! Ed |
This place http://www.digikey.com might have what you're looking for and they deliver (since you're 40 miles from the nearest Radio Shack).

13 ohms, 1W or greater is what you're looking for. Probably won't find that in a single resistor. You might also consider the ceramic "bathtub" resistors.
Ray G. on the Shoptalk Forums says you can probably go a little higher on the resistance if you need to. (I wouldn't go more than an extra ohm or maybe two.) --DD |
Thanks Alfred1, I've been looking at that site.
Dave, I've found a 15 ohm 3 watt, but it's rated (don't know if that's the right term) at 135 volts or something. That's not going to work with my 12 volt battery, is it? My little trip to Radio shack was really not too bad; it was a nice day, and I just stuffed a ratchet extension in the AAR hose to block off the extra air. Really, the car ran pretty good...hmmmm... It should work just fine. 3W means it will handle more power than it will ever see (~14V operating voltage / 15 ohm == less than 1 Watt). It should be able to deal with up to 45V--and if your electrical system ever sees 45V, the AAR will be the least of your problems...

Thanks Dave and AlfredSmileWavy
I took a chance and ordered two resistors that I mentioned. That will give me an extra to practice on. They are small, about 1/2" long and under 1/4" dia., and cheap. I like 'em already! Ed |
