Roll Bar vinyl

Can anyone describe tha best process for glueing new vinyl on the roll bar/ sail panels?

Is there a best place or piece to start with?
do the pieces have to be trimmed at spots after they are glued in place?

Remove all metal trim and window seals on roll bar. Use 3M Super Trim Adhesive (spray can) following directions on can for its use. If you are buying pre-cut pieces you will not need to trim. Do a "dry" fit first to get an idea of where to position the vinyl. After applying adhesive to car and vinyl, and allowing it to dry, you simply apply vinyl to the car.
I use the line at the bottom under the trim for initial positioning. All 4 edges will be covered with trim when you are finished.

Get someone to help with the long roll bar piece. That one is tough. Once the two glued pieces touch, you don't want to pull it up to readjust because the glue can ball up.

I think I trimmed the pieces down a little bit before applying, but left room to do the final trim after they were installed on the car.

Jeff, I always buy the precut pieces as well and i too always have to do alittle bit of trimming/cutting. The main thing is that in the corners at the top, i have found that it helps a bit to put a diagonal slit in the material in order for it to "clear" the corner. i think that when you get started, you will easily figure out what you need to do. That is one of those jobs that sounds tough till you see it in front of your face, then it all comes together...HTH..peter

be very careful with the spray adhesive. It works nearly as well as any paint remover product you can buy.

jmargush,

Did this job recently on my daily driver. Not sure if I posted it on my site though.

I did the entire job by myself. I used some 2in wide masking tape to position one side, then was able to pull it back to spray on adhesive. I also used some packing paper to tape off painted areas I didn't want to get glue on.

The top roll-bar peice can be done easily by lining it up, then tape it down on three sides. Spray the loose end, and press it down. I used a wall-paper squegie (sp?) to flatten the glue underneath. Once that end has set, I pulled back the tape from the other end and worked my way back about 1/4 of the length at a time. I did the final trimming as I glued, but you could come back and do the edges after the major portion is down and snug.

Good luck,

i believe there is 3m 077 which is less permanent than 3m 078. (don't hold me to it.) the taping one side sounds like an excellent method. 3d914, you are the man.

Do not use anything called 'spray adhesive' from like
KMart, go for the real 3M stuff or equivalent. My
sails are not sticking too good after using some
generic stuff and I'll have to respray with the good
stuff (when that gets anywhere near the higher
priority problems
