2 901 trans questions
I bring this over from the 911 BBS. You guys have more 901's than they do.
Did a search on gasket sealers for assembling the intermediate plate and cover. I thought this was just discussed recently. I guess I can't find the magic search words. What is the preferred sealer? I know this is critical because of the tolerance of the plate to case. Which brings me to ques #2. I mic'd the old gasket (plate to case) at .010. My gasket kit has three gaskets for this position , 2-.006 and 1-.008. How wold you go about setting correct pinion depth with those chioces? |
I think the gasket sealer was discussed recently on the 914club board. If I remember it was some $80 a tube 3M product.
|
I believe that there were three different thicknesses of gasket, so I think you may have a kit with a boo-boo. Try calling around to your favorite Porsche parts places and seeing if they have an .010 gasket, or possibly a .004 gasket?
Hopefully James (red-beard) will speak up on the sealant issue. There may be other alternatives to the $80/3 oz. tube 3M stuff, but then again a couple of people over on the other board seems to think it's the stuff that works the best. --DD |
Milt,
Hylomar will work as a sealer. Gaskets set should have .004, .006, .008 gaskets If not the .004 may be avialiable from the dealer. Ken |
Not wanting to add thickness to the gaskets, I have always sprayed the gaskets with copper gasket tack from a little aerosol can. Seemed to work fine for me (no leaks).
|
I was under the inpression that you use either Curil or Dirko for the intermediate plate.
|
I was under the impression that you dont use anything. Just check the color of the gasket(s) removed and replace with the same. I have only helped to rebuild one tranny though. There was no sealant on the gaskets removed.

They are sealants used by the factory.

hylomar is more a dressing than a sealant ( i use it a bunch on the old pitted parts on the boats.) it is non setting, so the gaskets peel right off if you have to take something apart again.
i would see what john walker recommends as a sealant. i'm sure jared is correct. |
I haven't used any sealents. With the specific thicknesses of the gaskets, a sealent may change the clearences.
Plus, in many cases, you use more than 1 gasket. Most of the time the gaskets come off pretty cleanly which says to me, there is no sealent. And definitely none between the "double" gaskets. The only place I have had a leak after a rebuild, was the gasket on the tail shift 6 tranny which was removed and replaced a couple of times, to fix the rear roll pin. And that just took my replacing the gasket with a different one (side shifters don't use this gasket and I have _lots_ of extra ones). James |
Hmmmm on the thickness. Usually you get a 4, a 6 and an 8.

Do the instructions say to, or not to use sealant?
|
I used a very light coating of Hylomar on the rear cover piece on the tranny that just came out of the car. I had inspected the 1st gear ass'y and put it back together and shoved it in the car. I turned out to be a bad tranny, which started this whole schlemozle (a David Hobbs word).
Just finished removing that tranny and pulling the gear stack out. The thing did not leak at the cover. But, the gasket is history, the Hylomar was not kind to it. The damn thing did leak at the input shaft seal which was new and installed with the stack in. Maybe that's not such a good idea. I will put no sealer in between the intermediate plate and the case because I will be using two gaskets, apparently. Someday, this will all be behind me (pun intended) and I can drive the car. Hah! |
