-6 voltage regulator

I may have to replace the voltage regulator in the -6 conversion I have been working on. What's the easiest way to get into the alternator to perform this operation? The engine is carbed. Cutting into the firewall is not an option on this car.

Uh, if I understand the situation correctly (regulator on alternator, not on relay panel) then you either have to remove the carbs and the 'cover' air guide to get at the alternator in the car...

...or pull the engine and have a shot at just taking out the alternator (or you'll have to do all of the above too.

I just finished cutting a porthole, and I wouldn't want to remove the alternator that way...I'd pull the engine.

Make *sure* it's the regulator, though, before starting

Pull the engine lid (just to get it out of the way), pull the carbs, loosen the fan pulley nut, pull the shroud, pull the fan. Shouldn't be too hard a reach, jack the car up anyway to save your back a little mileage. You gonna do the PCA race this year?

Thanks guys,

That's what I was afraid of. This freshly built engine (Motormeister) hasn't been run since I received it. When I went to hook up the battery I got a spark, so I went looking for the short. What I found was that it came from the red wire connected to the starter from the alternator. I get no measurable resistance between the red wire and ground. The engine builder suggested a pinched wire, ie. broken insulation. Regardless, I probably have to pull the shroud to get at the problem.

John, the SCCA has a national at NHIS the same weekend. I'll probably be there.
