2.0 engine question
 

How can you tell if you are looking at a 2.0l engine and not the smaller 1.8&1.7?I think the engine # is in a different place but can't think where.Also something about the intake ports on the 2.0 heads.Any help.Any demand for such a engine?

Look for the 3 intake studs on the heads, that is a 914 2.0L head. They engine # is different than the 1.7/1.8's its right by the oil breather.

The 2.0 914 heads have three intake studs; also the holes in the engine tin for the spark plug wires are on the vertical side part of the tin, not the horizontal top part.

2.0 engine cases start with "GA", "GB", or "GC" and are in front of the oil breather tower. The other 914 case numbers (and some of the VW-badged ones) are on a boss on the right-rear part of the top of the crankcase. They start with other numbers.

You can build any displacement Type IV engine on any Type IV crankcase. So even if you have a 1.7 case and non-914-2.0 heads, you could have an engine of 2.0 displacement. But it's not quite a "real" 2.0 motor without the heads.

An easy way to tell is if the factory air box is installed, the 2.0 looks like a bloated, malformed rectangle, the others are roundish.

The three bolts on the Heads is not a for sure 2.0, I tore down a motor that was a 2.0 only to find 1.8 pistons and cylinders. just thought I would throw that in. Steve
