Strange Noise

Was delightful outside this morning in Miami so I decided to drive the 914 to the office. Was going around a hard left hand 90 degree corner and heard a terrible noise that sounded like something had broken on my rear suspension. Kept on going for about 3 miles to get to the garage at my office. No more problems on the drive. Looked underneath the car and nothing was loose or falling off. The car seems to drive fine, no unusual noises for the rest of the trip and the car is sitting level in the garage.

Any ideas from any of you? This is on a 1970 914-6 that is pretty original with the exception of a 2.2 litre motor.

Its very possible it was just a spring settling in the shock perch. Mine move around occasionally when going over the large curbs (driveways) at an angle.

Just a guess.

Gerard:

I like your thought. It was an off camber turn and I was pretty aggressive. The other thing I was thinking was perhaps the top of the tire hit somewhere inside the wheel wheel. I am running 195/70-14 tires rather than the factory 185-14. I drove home this evening and nothing unusual.

I will get it up in the air tonight and take a look.

Just pretend it never happened.......if you concentrate enough on happy thoughts, you can make the whole thing go away.......just go to your happy place...go to your happy place...........go to your happy place....................

195 70 14 are actually smaller than stock. 195 75 14 would give you stock tire diameter.

Not being a Zen car driver (When something perplexing happends, you hit it with a stick), I'd go back and do it again and see if it repeats itself.

The 914 Koan: Which way is the 914 pointing?

Thanks guys for your thoughts.

I went to my happy place - the garage - and jacked the thing up in the air. Nothing loose, nothing broken.

I did check the coil spring on the right side and it may have turned a bot.

So I will try it again today and see if the noise comes back.

Kevin:

No noise the other direction. Tried it again this morning - although not quite as fast, and it was OK.

Perhaps the spring did move around a little. The car has red Konis on the back and maybe they need to be adjusted for my more aggressive driving style. I cranked the fronts up a bit [they are easy to adjust] but haven't done anything with the rears since I bought the car in December.
