Steel Fares available from AA... hmmm

Just got an e-mail saying that steel flares are in stock and now available for $950 per set. They're repros. Maybe the finally got their molds done and made some sets.

http://www.***********.com/action.lasso?-database=Items%20database&-layout=web&-response=record_detail.lasso&-operator=eq&serial_number=7050&-search

Anybody want to take and a gamble and see if they are pieces of crap?

Regards,

Karl,

I received that postcard from AA too. They started the repro flare program about four years ago, claiming they would be delivered in about a year. They claimed they needed 100 orders to begin production of 200 sets. The price for the initial 100 buyers was to be $600 a set with the following 100 sets going for $900 (I think). The 4 year delivery time was a little bit long.

Four years to receive a post card. How many years before one would receive the flares?

Just curious here, I am new to the 914 community, but why does everyone seem so down on AA? Granted I buy just about everything from Pelican, because they provide us with this BBS, and have tons of information on the site, and I want to support them. My only sale from AA was the hose kit that I bought on evil bay, but the sale seemed to go fine.

Rather than go into the whole spiel.....do an archive search using key words like, AA, Auto Atlanta, Treadway sucks, etc.....you will be amazed.

I just got off the phone with them. The sales guy claims they're better than the factory flares. "We had them laser scanned in Detroit and fixed the flaws, makes me want to throw out the originals we have here" he says.

Well I say, "Instead of tossing them in the shredder, give em' to me" He laughs of course, but who's laughing, I was serious!

I needed a good laugh this morning.

So... has anyone bought a set yet? They are a lot cheaper than the factory parts.

I got an e-mail from George that says he invested over $40K in them and that they aren't "crap". He says that they are made by the same guy that makes the repro 356 parts for Stoddard.

Someone fess up... you bought them, but you don't want to say...

How do they look, fit?

Regards,

I think it's a matter of economics.

Wayne tried to drum up the inquiries, but couldn't get enough response to justify the $50K in charges for having the tooling for the bucks made if demand wasn't high enough.

The dealer has them now for $2400 plus, you can go fiberglass, or try AAs flares. I guess George will fill the need for those need ing a more reasonable price than the factory parts.

I got one of the last sets of Porsche GT steel flares last year before the prices were raised.

I'm just wondering if the AA flares are better, and why? Forget they are being sold by AA. AA didn't make them, they farmed out the job.

Regards,

What I'd like to know is what's wrong with the factory flares? I had mine installed several years ago and they fit perfectly. The cost IS prohibitive (they were $1400 for the set when I bought them), but $900 is too much for a repro set, even if they "aren't crap". I purchased ALOT of parts from AA years ago when I started my 914 project. They were (are) high, but at the time, they were the only place that carried some of the parts that I needed. George DOES know his stuff. His biggest problem is that he is not what I'd call a "people person". I've had many a phone call with him, and while he can be nice, he seems too uptight to relax around. Unfortunately, I've noticed this behavior with many small business owners. They develop a kind of paranoya (sp?) that results in a "screw them before they screw you" attitude. It's too bad. Automobile Atlanta is a GREAT idea. It's just not managed quite well enough to justify their price, and certainly not an uppity attitude.

Someone on the 914Club BBS did get his set yesterday. He said they were great.

BTW, the price of the OEM flares is now up to $2600/set. Makes the $900 price seem a bit more reasonable, neh?

Just an FYI, we're going to be reselling these flares (we're going to be getting them from AA) along with their new shift knob. So if you don't want to deal with AA, you can deal with us. The price for the four flares from us will probably be the same as through AA...
