914-6 conversion questions
 

Am in the process of resurrecting a 914-6 conversion car that has not run in about 10 years. I am installing an Aeromotive rotary fuel pump and am replacing all of the hard plastic fuel lines in the tunnel. While the car is disassembled, I have the following questions:

1. Is there a template to properly locate a hole in the firewall so the engine can be timed with a timing light? Seems I have seen pictures of this.

2. Is there a method to properly locate and cut holes in a stock muffler to convert from single side outlet to dual center outlet?

Any tips greatly appreciated.

dont cut a hole in the firewall!!! buy the dansk muffler that is already welded and baffled correctly

What he said! Timing on these conversions (mine is a 2.7) can be a bit tricky. I finally went with a Pertronix system, coupled with an MSD and I now haven't touched the timing in 15 years. Those years were racing years and I'm now in the process of converting it back to the street. I will eventually have to replace the Pertronix, but that is a very, very small price to pay. Don't cut the firewall!

Thanks for the info. The Dansk muffler is a little pricey, but I guess you gotta pay if you wanna play. The front calipers (911-S aluminum) have been done by PMB, the rears should be sent off soon. Engine is 2.7, and was freshened when the car was last used, so I'm hopeful it will be ok. Virtually no progress in the summertime, as its just too hot in Fresno. I was an avid autocrosser in South Carolina, and many other places in the southeast before I came to California in 1989, and since there is no AC, short gears, and a rather stiff ride, I may sell it when it gets up and running. Basically still a very good car, and original owner by the way. Thanks again for the advice. I'll try to post updates as I make progress.
