syncromesh fluid in transaxle?

Anyone using Syncromesh fluid in their transmissions? My 914 is due for a fliud change.

I just changed my Jeep over to Penzoil Syncromesh fluid on the recommendation of many of the Jeep tech forums. Apparantly regular gear oil is bad for the syncros.

There was a big discussion on this topic recently.

I just changed mine to Swepco 201. Made a noticeable difference in the way the car shifts.

I think the synchomesh oil you are referring to is made for cars w/ brass synchros. Porsche uses steel synchros.:D

I did a search on "syncromesh" and came up with nothing. Do the 901 transmissions have no brass or other metals that can be damaged by regular gear oil?

Supposedly typical gear oil has sulphur which supposedly corroded the brass parts inside the Jeep transmissions.

They may have some brass parts. I still would not use oil designed for a trans w/ brass synchros.

Here is the tread I was referring to:

Well it's all academic at this point...

I can't get the damn plugs out. The allen screws are starting to strip. I guess I tighted them toooooooo much last time. So the old fluid is staying put until I can figure something out.

I'm thinking of welding the 17mm allen wrench to the screw and just crank it out. Guess I'll have to gring the screw off the wrench and do it again for the other plug.

Any sources for replacement plugs?
