Red face Oh! My!

Wow, I just installed an (ebay purchase) Autothority MAF and chip on my 914 3.2, this is now a totally different car, I swear it feels like its gained a 100hp. This thing now accelerates like a 930 turbo car, it spins the tires easily in first and on a WOT first gear you only spend about a 2 seconds before you have to grab second, and second gear is almost as quick as first! The driveability is 100% better, throttle response is now instantanious, making the car easier to drive, as opposed to the barn door stock air sensor lag syndrome.
Without a doubt the single best mod I have done to the car!

Its much more than a chip, its the air flow meter thats changed, all the restriction is removed from the intake system. It looks like a 3" drain pipe straight into the motor. To answer your Q its an 88 motor with a late model 915 tranny, 1 3/4" headers, and B&B free flow exhaust, light flywheel. It rips, it seems like the new MAF and chip just woke up the motor.

How does the maf fit?

How much space do you have in the engine bay with the new maf? More room or less room then stock? How much did you pay for the maf and chip?

The fit required a little fab work, not much really. The MAF normally (on a 911) plugs directly into the 90 degree boot that mounts to the throttle body, but that config left the MAF sticking out of the engine compartment by about 10%. A simple add of a 3"od alum tube 5" in length put it a little closer to the firewall, no clearence probs, with a little bracket fab and its good to go.
As far as pricing it was about 40% of retail, the chip was the clincher for me as it was burnt for an 88 motor which was perfect for me.

That is great

I was looking into the maf direct from autothority awhile back and I think it was around $1300.00 bucks. Did you buy from an individual?

Yea, I bought used from an individual. Have been really lucky with ebay. The B&B muffler I got from there was also a screamin deal at about 20% of retail.

did you do the 3.2 915 install yourself??

a 3.2 is on my wish list. do the later 3.2s have the plastic intake? or am i thinking of the 3.6?

i think i read you can flip the intake to avoid cuting the trunk, what did you do?

IIRC you said you track the car? i'm assuming you have a front oil cooler?

sorry for all the Qs but "i got the need to know"!!!! (-:

thanks, doug

Thats a negative on installing it myself the PPO (thats previous to the previous owner did the conversion) The late 3.2's have an all aluminum intake. And no I don't race it, however the PO had it set up as an aXer and I am taking it back towards street, he gutted the car, its quite light now at 2040lbs. As far as a front oil cooler it does not have one, my mechanic friend sez it has non stock cooler in the factory location that could be a 930 unit, I am not clear on that. The car seems to run plenty cool. And as far as flipping the intake, that is not necessary as you can just turn the rubber boot on the throttle body some so that it angles at about 30 degrees in relation to the stock 911 position.
I am looking into a few more mods: big bore throttle body, extrude hone the intake plenum, and having the injectors all match flowed.

As far as do I concour, just read my original post. The MAF and chip is without a doubt the single most dramatic bolt on improvement I have ever done to any car, its like it woke up the motor.
Thats a roger on the autothority ebay search, I set it up as one of my favorite searches, mind you it took a couple of months waiting until I found one. Also check the 911 parts ads here at Pelican, Good luck.

aahhhh ......... roger that tower!! (-:

i think it was brad r. on 914club that said he has tracked a 3.2 without a front cooler with no problems. mine is street only and i really don't want to cut the front for a cooler.

got any fotos?

what about the 915 shift linkage?

doug
