Question about factory primer

I cross-posted this to the 914Club board.

I went to look at a factory 914/6 today, with a view toward buying it. The original color was signal orange, and at some point in its life it had been re-painted red (possibly Guard's Red). When I started scratching around in the engine compartment, I found a dark green on the firewall. Would that have been a primer coat, or is it possible that the car has been re-painted more than once? Also, was the original battery location for a six the same as for a /4? The factory six (which is included with the car) was replaced in 1988 with a 2.7. The last time the car was registered was 1989. It hasn't been driven since then, and it's been about 3 years since it's even been started. I'd appreciate any thoughts, especially about the paint. Thanks.

Server crashed when posting, posting again

Seen Porsche primers in Grey, white, and yellow\green (Zinc-chromate)

It sounds like ZC primer

ZC runs the gambit from being almost yellow through looking a lot like ravenna green, then on to a dark green. (FYI, that green color you see inside military aircraft is ZC primer)

ZC has a flat or matte finish, and does not need to be painted over.

I would speculate, that since this is a factory 6 to a 2.7, if the PO had done any metal work, he coated the area with ZC.

Thanks very much for the response. The car is in good condition, very little rust. It has sat in a carport, underneath a car cover since 1989. I believe I'll go back and talk with the owner again.
