Stripped Rocker Assembly Stud
I replaced my pushrod tube seals and in the process I noticed that one of the studs that holds one of my rocker assembly's on was badly stripped, I tried a new nut and it got even worse...
How do I replace it? Are they screwed in? or pressfit? or what? Is there any way to do it with the head still on the block and the engine still in the car? Thanks, Danny 74' 2.0 |
They are just screwed in so you should be able to remove it with the engine still in the car. If vise grips don't work, and the threads are too munched for the two nut approach ,maybe you could clean the threads with a tap and get two nuts on. Be careful to not damage the valve cover sealing surface. Good luck!

There are also specific "stud removers" that grab the shank (the non-threaded part) of the stud. I would suggest hitting the stud with penetrating oil and tapping it with a hammer. Not hard, but some firm taps. (You don't want to break anything, but you do want to see if you can make the stud vibrate a tiny bit to help wick the penetrating oil in.) WD-40 is not a penetrating oil; Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster, and Kroyl are. In increasing order of reputed performance.
Heat may also help, but it can also weaken the threads in the aluminum. --DD |
Thanks guys, I got it out with some vice grips and got an old stud off a junk head a mechanic gave me.
