OK now, I was working on my 914 1.7L and knocked a couple hoses off the charcoal canister. I have attached a picture of what I have hooked up. My car runs like a vacuum hose is off, but both of them are hooked up in the correct spots per the PP 1.7L Vacuum hose diagram. The one canister hose is hooked up to the fan shroud inspection/vent cap, that I believe is correct. It's the other canister hose I don't know where it goes, it's the one going under the air filter box. One other question, to advance the distributer timing do you turn the distributer clockwise? Any help would be appreciated.

I think tha you have it connected incorrectly. If you have one of your hoses going to the air box ( the spider), then you have created an opening in your air system( Like an opening in the throttle). There should be a hose port on the side of your fan housing, and one on the air filter housing . The one on the inspection port is a new one on me. All your cannister hoses should do is rather passively vent vapors from your tank to the fan shroud (close enough of a discription, but I bet someone else will elaborate on that part).

I agree with Mike, the charcoal cannister system uses positive pressure from the fan (usually, coming from a port on the side of the engine tin, but it looks like you've got a port coming from the timing light hole plug - interesting!) that pushes air through the cannister, which is vented to the air cleaner box, not the intake manifold.
