Rear View Mirror
Dumb question of the day... How do you remove the rear view mirror without removing the glued on piece from the windshield? Most of the cars I've worked on have had a little set screw to hold it in place. I can't find one..
Thanks, HUTCHWE |
Mine (75) has the little set screw in it. It is deeeeeeply recessed in the vertical arm portion. You kinda hafta get you head screwed around under the thing and look directly up.
Be careful, it is a bronze screw on mine which can break if tweeked too hard. Don't ask me how I know..... |
I'm tagging this onto an older post that was kind of related to my problem....
I went a step further than HUTCHWE and snapped my rear view mirror off the windshield. It had been stuck to the windshield with some kind of adhesive. What should I re-stick this mirror on with? How can I tell if what I have is stock? Thanks! David |
Dave,
I would suggest you go to the flaps and buy the little rear-view mirror reattachment kit they sell. Just some kind of fancy two-part adhesive, as I recall. Follow the directions. Clean/scrape the glass with a new razor blade to make sure all the old stuff is off. You might need to clean the mirror mount pad as well. There might be a VW part number somewhere on the mirror frame. If so, then what you have is probably stock. I think. Ed |
Thanks Ed! I'll check for the reattachment kit. It does look like the stock mirror, too!
Thanks for the note! David |
Went through this all last year. There is a little peel-n-stick patch for the mirror that takes 5 seconds to attach. If Pelican doesn't have it then Performance Product does for $5.95.

RVM Placement
On this same topic, I have lost the original placement of my RVM. I realize that by now everyone has replaced their mirror several times and they may all be in different positions. Can I get a measurement from the top windshield trim to the top of the mount? Maybe if I get three similar numbers... I'm aware that it is also a matter of taste at this point. I just don't want to stick it on and think- damn that should be 1 inch higher! LOL
Thanks, Bruce |
I put mine back on recently and I put it on too high.
I'd have someone help you. Sit in the seat and try it until you can see properly. James |
Old post, but did anyone ever measure the distance from the top of the windshield to the top of the mirror? I am about to put mine on, and would love to have this measurement.
