Where do I mount cd changer (75 2L)
No room behind or under seats. No room in trunk when top is in there and front seems too close to gas tank.
Any thoughts, Joe |

I tried to mount my amplifier on the wall in front of the gas tank. I drilled through it in three places and found screws that would not interfere with gas tank. The last hole was already drilled by PO which I did not know about! So I accadentialy drilled through the gas tank #@!@#!!!!!! Moral of story, take out gas tang and drill holes and use bolts that go through the back side of wall. Good luck.

I have not tried this yet, but I planned on mounting mine in the glove box. I measured and it seams like I can cut the back of th box out, and mount the unit behind it. I can then use the glovebox door to add/remove cds. My other idea is the trunk, but I didn't measure in there because I thought it would fit. Ill have to look into it now.

My 12 disc changer is mounted sideways to the center console.

...but Mike, aren't you worried it will get pilfered? Do you lock your car every time you leave? I do not but probably should.

I don't have a changer.. but suggestions on places to put them?.. front trunk seems logical.. you can lock it.. but yes.. take heed on the drilling.. i've got a fancy drill and bits so that i can set the depth.. definitely would not want to drill through the tank..
another thing.. if you like building things like i do.. build a center console and mount it in there.. i've got my stereo in there right now (my arm got tired of reaching over to change stations).. and i've got 4 spaces for upcoming gauges.. but i can easily see someone putting in a changer.. just a thought, Jeff http://www.env-cai.csupomona.edu/admins/jeff/images/MVC-220F.JPG http://www.env-cai.csupomona.edu/admins/jeff/images/MVC-221F.JPG oh yeah.. i wouldn't worry about the CD changer if i were mike either.. there are a bunch of other things i'd go for first if i were raiding mike's car.. ![]() [This message has been edited by oredith (edited 10-13-1999).] |

Germain: If you look from under the dash you'll see the glove box is held on with a metal strap. Try taking the box out instead of cutting it. Center console sounds good, so does the front trunk. The only problem with being near the gas tank is the drilling question.
When you mount a changer remember the more solid the mounting the better. Also if it isn't a brand new state of the art, it will skip the least, mounted either up or flat. Thay say you can mount at angles but anything off of 90 or 180 increses skipping. Unless you have one with a buffer. |

If someone stealing the CD changer worries you, might I suggest a 0 dollar deductable on theft. I have it, and it cost me all of $10 more a year for 0 deducts on theft and comprehensive (pardon the spelling) coverage (Translation free replacement of stolen stuff, and free windshields if a rock hits it). You might want to look into it, and if the rate seems alittle high still, ask if you can do anything to lower it (I.E. Alarms/Theft Deturent systems lower the comprehansive part of your insurance bill). My insurance even gives a discount if you have a 3.0 GPA, or a degree of sometype. There not much, but they can help. Ok I'm done rambleing about insurance now. CYA

I like the "remove the glovebox idea". Oredith, it doesn't look like you have enough power running through your system...better think about upgrading! Talk to you guys soon, let you know how it turned out.

Speaking about adding all of the electronic stuff. What are the possibilities of upgrading the alternator to a higher out one? Right now I am running an Alpine deck with a kenwood 4 channel amplifier. I know I'm stressing the system but I like music damnit! It sure sounds good though. T hanx for the input.

Maybe, IF the bus alternators fits, it MIGHT have a higher amp rating because some of the buses (Westfalia's I think) had refrigerators and more lights, etc.
Or find a starter/alt rebuild place locally. They can put more "windings" on the alt for more juice. Also I think Phonix Gold (as do other manufactures) has a high amp rebuild program with a warrenty, but they may only do popular alternators. Note: Ain't no free lunch, the higher the amps the more parasitic loss at the crank. A second battery (properly isolated mind you) and some high micro farad caps may be better. just my $.03 (your local exchange rate may vary) |

ok, everyone who has stereo questions... things to do for needing power:
upgrade the alternator for more continuous power; try a cap for that hard hitting bass, they provide spontaneous sruges of power when asked for by a demanding thump of a sub; extra battery (dunno where you'd put it in the 914 though) sites to try: www.stinger.com www.partsexpress.com www.jlaudio.com www.kicker.com www.earthquakesound.com just to name a few of the many out there. if you have specific questions on how to wire something stereo related in, feel free to ask. (i sitll have problems with alarms) stereos i can handle. |

The glovebox idea sounds good. I know that is where I am going to mount something. Since I don't have a glove box because a bunch of dead mice were in mine when I bought the car off of this guy. It stunk too bad to save it. It had been stored in his garage for about ten years. I also found a dead mouse in the top of the fuse box wedged between two relays. They also ate about half of the padding out of the back pad. Well enough about mice. >^..^<

Joe,
May I suggest building a console box to fit between the seats to house your changer. The PO of my '74 2.2 liter did just that and attached the padded hinged cover to it. The changer sits in the box in a vertical position and offers very good access. Not only does the box hide the changer from view, it also gives you a nice arm rest. If you are interested, I could e-mail some photos to you. Gary |

Finally got the cd changer mounted. I removed the air vent thingy under or behind the glove box which gave me a flat surface (although angled a bit). Then with careless disregard for what was behind this flat surface (gas tank?) I just screwed the sucker on with tapping screws. Works perfect and it is COMPLETELY out of sight!
