The ride of your life, err or end thereof

Try this on for size. It is strictly point and shoot. What kind of suicide jocky would put a P-51 engine in a car? LOL

Sweet! Ya think I could fit that engine in a 914?:p  :D

nutzforporsche 05-21-2003 08:14 AM

It would be a squeeze James,..But I think we could make it fit. I want to be the first to get a really big life insurance policy on you! LMAO

JmuRiz 05-21-2003 08:24 AM

That gives new meaning to a LWB car, yikes. I'd buy it just for the motor though ;-)

Gawd can you imagine how hot the cockpit gets? Not to mention the incredibly high CO levels!

maf 914 05-21-2003 09:00 AM

I guess if you bought it Opel snobs would say "That's not a real Opel"! :D

My theory is, the guy who built it got tired of hearing his Opel GT being called a "baby Corvette." So he found the biggest, baddest engine he could find (well, the second baddest, after all, the Merlin was the motor that made the P-51 famous) and found a way to install it in the Opel.

I'd love to hear it run though!

nutzforporsche 05-21-2003 09:57 AM

Mike,..you got that right some yo-yo would pipe in and say something off color, but the last thing that they would say, ..." I'll race you title for title" LOL
I also would certainly love to hear it run. It has to sound wicked. The best application would be to put that engine in a Pantera. Plenty of room in the back.

mike95125 05-21-2003 09:58 AM

Considering that the Merlin engine cost $1,000,000, and the alison a little less, I'll stick with my TIV.

The Allison was a non supercharged engine, which relegated the P-51 A (and it's dive bombing couterpart, the A-36 Apache) to operations below 10 or 12000 feet. This engine was designed for use with a supercharger but the Army Air Corps decided to to produce it without one.

The P-39 Airacobra also used this engine. In Russia, where most air combat was done a lower altitudes, the P-39 turned out to be a great fighter - the Oldsmobile 37mm cannon mounted on the centerline may have had something to do with that.

cshogen 05-21-2003 10:25 AM

I just keep looking at this thing over and over. As ridiculous as it is you gotta hand it to the guy.... it does run and drive. Shockingly, it has "clutch release problems"!

dc914guy 05-21-2003 10:54 AM

Oh my! That must be one hell of a ride!

zymurgist 05-21-2003 11:33 AM

Any Photoshop gurus want to photoshop what a 914 would look like with this engine? ;)

72Signal914 05-21-2003 11:52 AM

I'll do it, but it won't be until thursday night til its posted

nutzforporsche 05-21-2003 12:38 PM

I'm green with envy. I could have that used that in my old 8th mile strip car. A little spray and the right gearing I could reach warp speed! LOL

kellzey 05-21-2003 12:49 PM

Everyone knows you can't V12 an Opel!

Oops! I stand corrected!

I want to put a Turbo shaft T58 GE-16 engine into a VW bus, and use it for a daily driver......Already figured out the mounting!

Ah, but have you figured out a transmission? That's the $60,000 question.

You could use it to power a generator and an electric motor(s) like a turbine locomotive I guess.

wy, yes I have......and its not VW or Porsche.....
The big problem is that Turboshafts are designed to operate at or near 100% Ng (Gas generator speed) so the throttle and fuel controls will need alot of work...I know where I can get a core for 15K, it needs a rebuild! That ain't no problem though.

No, no, no! If you're going to put an aircraft engine in a 914 it's got to be air-cooled! ...say a P & W Double Wasp radial from a P-47....
