Refinishing Hubs and Stubs

Okay... I'm going to refinish/restore a set of early 911 hubs and stub axles. The set I have is in very good condition, the splines and studs are all great. There is some slight surface rust on the cast metal part of the stub axle. I figure I'm going soak the part in marine clean first, then tape up the splines and bead blast the whole stub axle.

Then what? How should I protect the freshly blasted metal. I know the splines of the hub will be protected with grease...

How did they come new from the factory?

Thanks,

But some of this, spray it on and forget it.

Buy the automotive grade. They will sell you at a two can mimimum @ 5.49 a can + shipping. I've done some research on rust preventers for bare metal undercar parts. I am becoming a distributor for this product.

Zeke,

What exactly is that stuff? Is it just a clear spray or is it like a spray paint? It talks about periodicaly applying it. How often do you have to apply? If it's not like a spray paint, does it dry or does it have any kind of oily or wetness to it once you apply it?

Sorry for all the questions but since your going to be a dealer of this product you'll probably enjoy answering all them.

Hah! I can't answer all the questions 'cuz I don't know. Here's what I know: I first saw the stuff being used on "Dream Car Garage" on SpeedChannel a couple of years ago. I emailed the show's host, Tom, and he put me in touch w/ the Canadian company that makes this stuff, Krown products. They won't sell to US customers. They licensed CarWell to sell it here. The main gig is franchised applicators and they shoot it on UPS, military and other fleet vehicles. Some of the products available are parafin based, but I don't believe this is the case with CarWell/Krown. It does not leave an oily film that would be attractive to dirt. It does not harden and it doesn't stay wet. Think of it as a long term PB Blaster with the emphasis on prevention rather than desolving. It does leave the metal looking like it was wiped lightly with oil.

For the CW's, many parts were not painted and these guys don't paint what wasn't painted. So you have bare metal undercar parts prone to rust. Use this stuff.

BTW, there's another similar, if not the same product used on the show "A Car is Reborn," filmed in England and featuring a Type I XKE Jag. They used probes to inject the Jag's longtitudinals. It doesn't seem to harm painted surfaces. I intend to find out more.

Well I ordered two cans. I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work, you're flying out here and refinishing my hubs! Ha ha!
