Love this forum! And type-1 bias?

I just wanted to express how much I love this forum as a resource. I just got back from the local VW "machinist." These guys seem to be T-1 to the core. I originally went in expecting them to do all my work for my rebuild and heard comments from them like: "Nobody uses type fours anymore..." and "it's impossible to get such a part for a t-4..."-while I had just ordered the part a day ago. These comments soon lead me to take my business elsewhere but if I hadn't had the support of this and STF forums I might've gotten discouraged.

Today I took my case and oil cooler to them for cleaning (they had the right procedure) and started talking about my KB 96mm pistons. The owner says-"you'll hate those-they leak oil like a bastard....I can sell you a brand new set of 94s for $245!" Yea, I'm sure those are much better!

I was tempted to teach him about our large T-4 community and increasing aftermarket parts inventory via PP and aircooled.net, but decided you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Thanks

Ben

Don't worry, it's easy to find parts for our Type 4 "tractor motors".

Closed minded people burn me... Oh wait, I'm one of them.

Type 1's suck... There...

Type I? Isn't that a real VW motor?

Type 1 are great, if you have a VW Bug. I actually put a type 4 into my bug way back when. In my opinion the type 1 ended up being the better choice for a bug..... much higher rev line and easier to get power out of them.

But you can't put a Type 1 in a 914 (well I guess you could do anything if you set your mind to it). Most Type 1 engine builders are concentrated on VW cars, they don't know much about type 4 engines for 914s. Another way to look at it is VW people are CHEAP! They don't want to spend much money on power (even though the two are synonimous). The tye 1 engine is the Chevy small block of German cars.... the cheapest parts available are for this engine.
