2.0 price and value of 1.7???
 

Hi all
So I started up my friend's 2.0 that we quickly tuned & timed and took it for a short blast down his street and back. The car hauled! I can't believe there's such a tremendous difference between a 1.7 and a 2.0. My 1.7 runs great - super smooth, a bit raspy, and doesn't burn any oil - and doesn't leak enough to leave any drips on the driveway either. BUT, I have to wind it up to really get moving.
His 2.0 leaks, stinks and rattles , but just snapping the throttle makes a nice powerful sound, and I even stuffed myself into the seat a bit going into second and third. Waaay cool.
So what do I do? I'm gonna find a carbed 2.0 and rebuild it next winter. Maybe a 2056? who knows, but at least I've solved my dilemma as to what engine to put into it.
What does a nice rebuilt '73 1.7 with 60 thou on it and 34ICT's fetch these days, and what can I expect to spend for a complete 2.0 longblock?
I'm looking forward to building a nice motor, and think that would be a good start.
What's the general opinion on this, and what else is involved besides just swapping the engines out?

I saw these guys site on the net. If you are going to replace the current engine, might as well go with a 6.

They are in San Diego. I haven't heard any feedback on the quality of their work. Maybe someone knows of them here. Too bad you are in New York and their location is diametrically opposed. At least you can get a price idea. Then there's Jake Raby that builds engines in GA I think. He has a good rep. and is closer.

Hey..I have a 2.0 motor sitting in my garage that I was going to rebuild, but other priorities took over. I have the long block, all the sheetmetal, stock FI and Bursch exhaust. I am selling all for $600.......But I am in San Diego.

Hey Mikey, I prolly won't be doing this till winter (lotsa snow and ice for like 8 months it seems - plenty of time to mess around in the garage making engine sounds) - I'd snap that deal up in no time, it sounds like everything I'd need. For curiosity, what would it cost to ship all the way over here in NY? And can anyone tell me what else I'd need to do to put in FI? All the hoses, charcoal canisters, relays etc. have been removed and are long, long gone. I like the idea of FI, but with what I'm missing it may be too expensive?
I would love to put in a real flat 6, but the cost of all the right parts is just too ridiculous for me to even consider. I was gonna put in a 3.8V6, (I have a complete Olds 98 thats in perfect shape) but I figger it's a pain in the a** and I don't wanna hack up my little car any more than I already have. Plus, I like the sound of the little aircooled deal redlining, (I race dirtbikes too and am hooked on that sound) and the little impeller whoosh makes people in cars next to me look at my car like it's from another planet. I had one dope ask me what kind of car it was and if it was turbocharged! And it says "PORSCHE" in big letters all over it too. Geezus.
Anyone in Upstate NY want a 1.7 motor or a real nice 1986 Olds 98 Bro-ham? Or trade complete car for 2.0? Ahh, I can dream of it being that easy........

I send engines to NY for about 175 in shipping, with no sales taxes either...

We could build a 2056, 2270 from your core 1.7 easily.

There is no excuse for a fully dynamically balanced, blueprinted, dyno tuned engine with a spec manual that has every technical aspect in black and white- No guesswork, bolt it in, and drive.

Yeah, I'd be doing the work myself, mostly because of the cost issue, but also because I enjoy building and am interested in knowing as much as possible about these things.
Jake, out of curiosity (and to consider also I s'pose?) what's a guesstimate for buiding from my 1.7 core? I agree with you completely and would love to have you do a motor for me, (and I'd be in no hurry either) but I'm not sure if my single-guy-with-mortgage-and-too-many- hobbies status can afford it :)
Although a 2270 would romp nicely, I'm sure!
