engine will not start

Hello everyone, love driving my 1972 1.7 but now the engine just stops running while driving and I have to wait 30 minutes before it will start again. This problem only happens if I drive the car over an hour so I don't think the engine is overheating. I have searched the threads here but so far not finding help. I know I need to troubleshoot after the car stops running but not sure where to start. Any help would be great!

Thanks

Danny

Hello,
After checking more threads I found out that a common problem with the early years of my 914 was the fuel pump location was causing a vapor lock condition sometimes after the pump was heated up because it was mounted to close to the heat exchanger. The fuel pump was removed and installed in several other locations that fixed the problem. However, just to see if this was my problem, I installed thermal wrap around the fuel pump and I will take the car for a test ride tomorrow.

Hope it works.

You can also pop off the mushroom cap on the heater valve and attach a hose to vent the heat away from the pump.

Hello, installing thermal wrap on the fuel pump did not help as the car still died on me. At least I was able to confirm that even when the car would not start, I was still getting spark on one of the spark plugs. So at least now I know I have a fuel problem. The car will run perfectly for over an hour until it dies on me. There is no vacuum line problems. When the cars dies I also checked the fuel pump operation by turning the ignition key off and on and I hear the pump turning on a few seconds. At this point I am not sure what I can check. I was thinking I could test the fuse and check the connections on the relay board relays for the fuel pump but when I turn on the key, the pump is working ok.
Hope someone can help me!
