Where does this coil go???
 

OK... this is weird. My original coil was removed on a trip when it went south. I replaced it but found the replacement slightly smaller in circumference. I slapped that coil in with the idea that it needed to be replaced if only as a temporary fix. Well, I just bought a blue coil from PP (of course!) and find that is has the same physical dimensions! Before anyone wonders what the big deal is... The present smaller coil has slid out of the band that straps this to the front of the air shroud. It has slid down twice into the space between the shroud and the firewall... and yes, VERY close to the fan intake.

The shroud has a mount (bracket) for the coil that allows it to be banded. This is definitely for the larger coil. The smaller coil whether it be duct taped or wedged into place does not work in this position. Presently it is zip-tied into place if I go around few corners and don't go over any bumps..... :-(

So.... My blue coil came with a bracket that looks as though it should mount on a flat surface somewhere but I can't find that place where that may be! So I wait for a response because I want to corner again.... :-)

My coil attaches to the top of the cooling tin near cyl #4, near the distrib. It is just to the right and back of the dizzy, going toward the batt tray. The coil sits on top of, and perpendicular to the cooling tin, more or less parallel to the cyl. The bracket bolts to two studs coming up from the sheet metal. Mine boke here, and I've had to put in big washhers to support the stud. This is a 73 2.0. I'll take a picture later and try to post it.

My 2.0 has the single bolt band that mounts to the cooling shroud as you described. Also the cooling tin has the mounting for the standard type adjustible coil band with two bolts. These are located near the distributor and are two threaded captive nuts on the underside of the tin. I am currently using this location as I stripped the threads in the alloy cooling shroud bolt hole many years ago. :rolleyes: Check the top surface of the right side tin, you probably have these too.

I'm still not sure where I can place this. I know I'm slow but I cannot find any surface mount for this bracket. Is it actually under the tin? And if so, do I have to pull the tins up and is this much of a job? I'm about ready to pull out the zip-ties again! :-)

i carved a wood "wedge" to fit the smaller coil on the cooling housing. carved it slightly concave and put the wood piece under the coil

figured anything out yet?

sorry I didn't get this posted earlier. I see yours was never located here. You could attach to your cooling tin like a 2 liter, but it would have to come off first (right. OK). So I think I would try to figure out some kind of sleeve, like goes around the guages in the console maybe. I can't figure out how to att the picture.

I'm trying to figure this out (still). Is there still a larger coil for this car since the original was..., well, original! This seems pretty strange that I have to jury rig something so basic.....

Perhaps PP needs to take this one back or I need to continue the attempt at creativity!

I'm trying to figure how I can use the sleeve concept... and the wedge idea is what I was using when my coil took the dives into the firewall. Granted, I had created a metal piece but it just looked tacky (on top of almost destroying my engine). :)

I'll let you guys know what I end up doing. At this point I'm not brave enough to put my new coil in....

The blue coil is now the "stock" replacement. There are two versions of the blue coil--one is a little smaller than the original coil, and the other is significantly smaller then the original one.

I wrapped some bicycle inner tubing around the blue coil and used the stock (for some years/engine sizes) bracket that goes on the engine tin. The bracket that comes with the blue coil has holes that do not match the two on the engine tin. You can probably fake something up with one of the holes on the fan shroud if you need to, using that bracket.

No picture yet. I had to make a website that I use only for attatching pics... I then give the web address for that specific picture. I tried yesterday for quite some time before I got it to work!!! I know graphics can take up quite a bit of space so I think PP may do this so they don't have to store gigabytes of pictures... but it sure is a pain!

I would use the thick cork or heavy duty rubber foam bicycle handle bar tape around the coil, underneath the mount.

Nice picture Scott! I ended up doing the inner-tube thing and it works very well. Out of curilosity, should the coil I removed make a sloshing sound? :) No wonder it was toast!

BTW, Thanks for the tip on the picture posting. I would have never guessed....
