Will this sway bar work?

I'm wantin to put a sway bar on Punkin and need advice on this one that's on Ebay.

Would I be ahead to get a new one?

As long as you don't pay too much, I'd say go for it
(last time i sold a factory bar like that I let it go for $75)

$100 is okay , but after that I'd save my money for an aftermarket unit.

One tip: Drive the car until the tank is darn near empty, it's a pain to have to drain 10 gallons while under the car...(did this just this past weekend)

Thanks Mike, Was looking at the Weltmeister on Pelican too. Is the quick mount just as good so the tank doesn't need removing?

NO!!!!!

'Scuse me for shouting...

I really think the "no tank removal" installation kit is junk. It's two U bolts that you have to push in through the hole you drill for the bar. No reinforcements, so you're just going through one thin layer of sheet metal. Plus you may run into problems with the square-section reinforcement at the bottom of the tank compartment.

I strongly do not recommend that installation kit. Go ahead, remove the tank--it's not that hard!

The 19mm bar is not a bad option, either. It is definitely more expensive ($300+), but it is adjustable. You can use it to fine-tune the balance of the car--or you can use it as something to keep tweaking to the point where you stop concentrating on driving... (Been there, done that!)

The stock bar, particularly if you can pick it up cheap, is a good option. You'll want the "remove the tank" mounting kit, and you'll want the "U-tab" kit. Those will increase the overall cost of the install.

Bruce:
Were it me(and it was), I wouldn't screw around with a non-adjustable sway bar. Do some shoppin' for a 19mm (or22mm) Welt bar....new, used, whatever. Tarret is very nice for another hun and a half.

Bruce Allert 06-11-2003 11:29 AM

JP, I agree wit'cha...
I been looking at the Welt. I also called Gary at Parts Obsolete. He said he has some. When I spoke to him I didn't specify adjustable tho so I gotta make another call to 'im.

The S/B that mounts to the floor of the trunk will tear the metal unless you use a backing plate and round off the sharp corners. Steve

Smart Racing makes one that is REALLY pretty and well engineered....cost a few scheckles more than the Weltie though....

chrisreale 06-12-2003 07:38 PM

I copied JP and got the Tarett bar. Its 22mm. If you get a 22mm bar, ya might as well stiffen the front up with some 22mm torsions, and while you are at it, bushings ball joints and wheel bearings......and while you are there also......
What is your current set up?

Currently... 0 (zero)! Absolutely stock, start at the beginning!:)
I figure I'd start with the sway bars then go for the 2.0 when one comes available.
