Help!?!?

Ok guys, I need help!

What I've done: I have a '74 2.0L with the original fuel injection. I have replaced the cap, rotor, points, condensor, plugs, wires, cylinder head temp sensor, adjusted the valves, set the dwell and timing, the MPS holds a vacuum and tested good, replaced the vaccum lines and the injecotr seals.

Now my problem: The car runs poorly. It doesn't idle well, seems to be running very rich, and is back firing up into the intake (when I rev it I can see a flame sometimes). The plugs are black and sooty. And when you rev the car, it stumbles and hesitates and almost stalls before it revs.

My thoughts: Bad Throttle position sensor, bad valve adjustment, bad CHT sensor, bad MPS (any or all of the above). I checked the cold start injector, and it doesn't leak.

I'm at a loss, and getting very frustrated. Any ideas, suggestions, things to test or try would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

the adjustment on top of the ECU is idle mixture at idle only. i think you need to go to a place with a CO meter and set idle mixture.

I've tried adjusting the Fuel mixture knob on top of the brain all across the range, and it makes no real difference. Still wants to stall when revved.

Thanks,

Sounds a lot like a rich mixture. Check the parts that you have listed--MPS, CHT, and so on. Also check the fuel pressure, check the vacuum hoses, and make sure all the hoses and wires are hooked up correctly.

If you haven't seen it a zillion times yet, check Brad Anders website for all the D-jet info that yet exists. http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders

I'm thinking rich running is the problem too. I just checked Brad Anders' site again (only about the millionth time) and I have a few more ideas and things to try. Another couple of questions for everbody out there. Where is the fuel pressure regulator located, exactly. I'm not sure if I've ever seen it. And, what does the decel valve look like. I have a thingy with a vacuum line going to it, and what appears to be 2 fuel lines going out, connected to the fuel rails. Is that the pressure regulator, or the decel valve, or something entirely different.

Thanks guys,

The fuel pressure regulator should have one fuel line in, and one fuel line out. It should be on a bracket on the left-rear of the engine tin.

The Decel Valve has a thin vacuum line going to it, and two medium-thick ones. It should be on the same bracket as the MPS over on the right side of the engine bay.

Brad's website has pics of most of the components on it.

Ok, as far as I can tell, I have two fuel lines coming off of either fuel rail, and going to the decel valve where the vacuum lines should be. And it doesn't look like I have a fuel pressure regulator. What the @*!# ?!? I assume thats not normal. I'll have a closer look tonight, but I think the PO did some creative fuel and vacuum line hook ups.

Thanks,

Check the hose diagrams, available elsewhere on this site. They will show you the general locations for the various parts, and how the hoses hook to them.

Mike,

Sounds like the PO was on the ball there! If you need a fuel pressure regulator let me know. I know I have a working used one around.

Enjoy!

This is going to sound too easy, but try new spark plugs. I had the same prob.'s with my FVEE, did a zillion things, and then finally changed what were very new plugs. The engine is running great now. The plugs that I took out looked great, but definately were the problem. Good Luck,Pete
