The factory supplied engine-access panel for the 914/6-GT and 916? was a double-width grill whereas for other 914s it was half grill and half sheet metal.
Presumably, the factory thought high performance/high speed cars needed to get more air into the engine compartment? It follows that the higher the speed, the lower the air-pressure behind the rear window and the more asthmatic the engine is likely to be. I would like to ask those of you who have experience with larger capacity 6-Cyl 914s - What is your direct experience with this issue. Is it a problem? If so, does the double width grill fix it in all circumstances? With the large grill, how do you keep the water out of the ignition in heavy rain, especially if you're in traffic? TIA... You've got it backwards...the GT hood lids with the extra grills are for "cooling"....you want to get rid of the radiant heat off the motor and from the engine compartment.
A 3.6 motor has no problem getting air into the motor with the stock 914 engine lid A cover could be made to go over the ignition, the biggest challange will be to insure no water can get into the intake while in a heavy rain.

Mike, thanks for clearing that up... If there's not going to be an induction problem at high speed, I'm not overly concerned...
I have an auxilliary oil-cooler in the form of a C2 electric fan/cooler combo (in lieu of the 'normal' front trunk type cooler) mounted in the left-rear corner to keep temperatures under control so will see how that goes in practice - thanks for the info.
