What should i do about engine compartment?
Awesome, dropped the engine today! Now first question, what should i do about the compartment? What im getting to is, is there anything i can spray onto a lot of the sheet metal, such as rubber, or bedliner, but something that wouldnt melt?

Strip it bare, then do the whole Por-15 treatment. While you are there, if needed, replace the battery tray and support. Also check the condition of the rear suspension "ears", as its much easier to deal with while the engine is out.

forget the bed liner. like chris said. i hate the sound deadener so mine went bye-bye. go to your loacal auto body supply. if your car is painted the same color as the paint code on the drivers door they can mix up deltron in a rattle can to match. use a good self etching primer. you don't have to pull the wire harness just mask it off. when you're doing it, spring for new seals for the engine tin. i finnished painting mine a month or so ago.

Urbanskater - how come you're not using that Duplicolor rocker spray stuff you got at Walmart? I sprayed mine with Wurth Stone Guard, the same stuff Porsche uses today for rocker panel and undercoating. After welding in new steel on the firewall and a new battery tray I used epoxy primer on the metal than a coat of the Wurth over that. Make sure you really get things clean under that battery tray. Neutralize any acid residue, get it as clean as you can, then make sure everything is well coated with whatever you use. also make sure those weep holes are clear of debris. Bedliner or rocker panel spray will hold up to the heat. Believe me, down here in Tucson my truck bed gets HOT out there in the sun all day. Also, light colors reflect heat and light in the engine compartment. Of course if you have a black car you probably don't want a white engine compartment.

fortunate for me, the guy before me rigged this crappy new box, so i dont need to worry about the rust or anything, but more importantly i am putting the battery in the rear trunk.
|
why are you relocating the bat to the trunk!? if that's what you wind up doing i would further lose the trunk carpet and sound pad. why introduce acid in that area? a bat tray is an easier r&r than a trunk floor. make sure the top will fit before you put in the bat.

just a couple of shots of what mine looks like.

well my dad has a few racing buddys, who modified their 914's by placing these flat batteries in the trunk area. Two reasons why they did it, one its out of the way of everything, and two, the reason they said it leaked was because it got too hot causing it to leak everywhere. But i wont have to worry about rust because the back trunk will be sprayed with bedliner stuff as well

are you building a race car or a car you want to be able to put some luggage in? charging system problems add to the acid probems. it's not just a heat issue. in my 72' a po did the switch. the acid and moisture did a fine job where the rear body panel and the floor meet. junk the open cell bat and get a good one.

how much would a highend bat cost?

Jeez Kevin, that's so clean its almost sick... ;)

Kevin, that firewall w/o sound padding looks very nice. Are you running no heat in that thing. Without the heat ducts the bay looks really clean. Damn, one more thing to add to the to-do list

Hey Kevin, I will gladly send you a couple pounds of goo, a bag of leaves, a mouse hide, and the Butterfinger wrapper from my 1.7s engine compartment to help you get started on your collection.
