Cup holders

Anyone found a good cupholder that works particularly well in a
914? Pics?

I'm working on converting my ashtray into a drinkholder. I'll post pics when completed.

What's the deal with the cup holder thing? We didn't need them for years and now we need them?

I had a '72 914 starting in '72 and kept it until '89. Had a 911 starting in '80 and kept it until '96. No cup holders. Not one in my PU either. Have I missed out on life?

I don't think it's a question of not NEEDING them, I think it's just that no one ever THOUGHT of them.... Now that they're there, I find that it's nice to be able to take a cup of coffee with you on a long commute or cross-country drive. Since there now exist myriad styles of aftermarket cupholders in the fuzzy dice section of auto stores, I thought one of you people may have found one that worked well ergonomically with the teener interior. It's not like you're gonna put one in your racecar or anything. BTW, there's GOTTA be one in that Boxter!

People spend a lot more time in their cars and stuck in traffic than back in the 70's. Mom is less likely to be making breakfast at home, so more people mix their longer commutes with some form of breakfast, or snack, or lunch, (not to mention applying makeup, reading the paper (!), yakking on the cell phone, etc, etc).

I don't use my teener to commute, but those 5am drives to the track on DE days REQUIRE coffee. I got one of those FLAPS cup holders and just screwed it down to an 8" square piece of MDF. It sits on the passenger seat, doesnt slide around, and holds a large coffee very well, thank you. I originally planned to cut the MDF to "nest" into the center console flat, just ahead of the gearshift, but decided bleeding the brakes was more important.

No cup holder in Box. I guess they come in the S model. Go figure, stiffer suspension and cup holder. In the old days before MADD got everyone excited about drinking and driving, we just put the brewsky between our legs. No, it's not a good idea to drink and drive. But in the sixties and seventies, there was no speed limit in Nevada and you could legally have an open container in a vehicle in Texas. You could drink and boat as well. Times have changed.

The point here is that all this was going on w/o cup holders. They seem silly to me. Oh, and as far as the coffee, mine is gone by the third stop light. Guess I drink it too fast.

It's a good thing you dont have to shift gears before that third stoplight....

It's the fifth stoplight that worries me. That's where he jumps out to drain the sump and gets a refill.

My Boxster has a cupholder. I think all Boxster models came with them starting in 2001.

guards,

This is a cup-holder that was in my 914 when I purchased it in Ventura, CA. I haven't used them for a while but will be putting them back in the car. They are made in USA by Cobbs Mfg, and are called Wizard Adjustable Drink Holder.

The circular base rotates to open/clse the long arms that hold the drink. The shorter pads (below circular base) are adjustable as well, and would mount onto the vertical side of the center console which is about 3/8 in thick.

That modified ash tray sounds good also.

Enjoy!

Guards --- For what it's worth, I use the same set-up as 3D914. So does my friend, Jeff, who showed it to me. It was pretty inexpensive ($5-$7), and it adjusts to various can/cup sizes. It stays in place, when clamped to the vertical lip of the console. (Can't see how you would use this holder without a center console.)

P.S. It's pretty sad that one of the only things that I have been able to offer advise on is a cup holder. I must go now, and hang my head in shame.

My last 914 had a nice cup holder that mounts on a vertical surface, (door panel) and folds up when not in use. Since it was a daily commuter, I did use it a lot. I like that it could fold out of the way. You barely notice it when it is closed.

FWIW, I don't prefer to shift gears except on the race track. If the Tiptronic worked as good as as GM 700R4 4-speed automactic and didn't sap so much power from the Boxster motor, I would have gotten on of those instead of the 5-speed. As far as 6 speeds on the street are concerned, well it's hard to use all those gears in the city or on the freeway at the crawl we call commuting.

However, you should see my wife drink coffee and shift. I guess its an art form with the women; apply make up, change the CD, talk on the phone, shift, drink, eat and talk to the kids all at the same time. This is not my wife, but I see it every morning.

My 96 Passat came with an after thought for a cup holder. It folds up like those stated above and holds a wide assortments of cups, bottles and such. What makes this interesting is that it just screws into any vertical surface (such as a storage bin or center console) and could be modified for other attachments, I'm sure.

Just my $.02

Brad, I would be afraid of spilling coffee on those nice seats! I just set the cup in the 2.0l console and if I spill I wipe it off the vinyl.
I have seen a cup holder that hooks onto the dash with a hook piece that was molded to fit. Very slick, maybe a NLA dealer part?
