Mounting Rocker Panels

I am in the middle of a paint job/restoration of my '75 914 and am at a sticking point. My fiberglass rocker panels were mounted in a klugie (sp?) way by the PO some 15 years ago. While I had the car apart, I decided to fiberglass over all of the torn out holes and get the real black rivets, etc to remount the rockers. Well, I know where all the holes in the top of the rockers go, but I can't figure out where to use what screws from the "official" fiberglass rocker mounting hardware kit. The holes in the bottom of the rockers were pretty much freelance creativity by the PO and all had sheetmetal screws in them. The kit included 2 long thin sheet metal screws with those clip on tap nuts and plastic spacers per side, 3 thicker cheese head screws per side, and of course the 6 black rivits per side. I understand where the rivits go, but am unclear about the sheet metal screws and the cheese head screws. The PO had holes in the sides of the rocker panel, near the back, which I am pretty sure were wrong and are no longer there, thanks to some fiberglass and paint.

Can anyone tell me where the sheet metal screws and cheese head screws go? Maybe even give me some measurements from one end of the rocker?

BTW, four coats of gloss black lacquer, two of clear, and a bit of rubbing and polishing make for some beatiful rockers. We'll see how well the lacquer holds up. (May end up with body schutz somewhere in my future...)
Many thanks!

PeteD

The two longish sheetmetal screws go at the opposite ends of the rocker panel. They connect the rocker panels to the quarter panels. they go from the top down. there should be two holes in the tire well already near where the rockers panels end up. Don't know if they all had this.. but mine has a rubber spacer that goes in between the rocker panel and quarter panel where the sheetmetal screw goes through.

the 3 cheesehead screws, those go alone the bottom of the rocker panel, will have to get back to you on measurements if you need them, but there should already be holes in the floorpan for them. they're roughly located at the front extremedy, rear extremedy, and in the center..

HTH,

Jeff

Thanks Jeff! I will have my car back from he painter on Tuesday evening so I will check out those holes then.

The sheetmetal screws go in the top edge of the rockers at the ends. They go pointy end down and the clip nuts go on the rocker. Got it! Thanks! Now I can start drilling holes in my "new" rockers.

Having just put fiberglass rockers on my '75, I found that due to the thickness of the fiberglass vs. the metal, I couldn't get both the top rivets and the bottom screws to go in their original holes. My solution was to make up a couple of oversized "clips" out of washers to extend over the bottom of the rocker panel. This let me use the existing threaded holes in the clamshell.

Another tip, to get the nice black rivets I just used regular aluminum pop rivets and a dab of Testers black model paint. Looked perfect.
