Looks like the clutch is shot

So I finally was able to get the clutch cable installed and fully adujusted but the car is still grinding gears. A friend and I played with it for a good 3 hours, and found a lot of junky home fabricated stuff. Apparently the clutch cable tube had come loose so they made a plate at the fire wall which kept tension on the cable. The only problem was that the dumb ass's cut the plate so that they could slide the cable on to it with out having to take it out. So when the plate broke, you lost the tension in the clutch. Well anyway, we made a new plate and were able to fully adjust the cable but still no go. The biggest clue to me toward's it being the clutch is that the little arm from the tranny which the cable connect's to is totally loose, you can move it back and forth with one finger. So my question is what is involved with doing a clutch job? What is the bare minimum I can get away with? And the golden question, how much?
Thanks,
Eric

P.S.
This is my first big experience with my 914 and "hell on 4 wheels" is very fitting.

Be sure to check the pedal play before dropping the motor.
Another check is to turn the car off, put it in gear and see if the car tries to move fwd. Then the clutch needs to be adj. Other wise, it my be the tranny synchronizers.

To replace the clutch, drop the motor and tranny. Good time to fix oil leaks and clean everything.

it's possible to drop only the trans. you have to decide whether it's more convenient to replace clutch working under the car or remove whole drivetrain if you have some "while i'm in there" things to do

I did the clutch without dropping the motor, it worked well, but it became a HUGE pain in the A** to mount the tranny back to the motor while working under the car!!

ATV jack works well for that. you do have to get it lined up right. depends on what you have to do; only clutch or bunch of stuff

Another item to fail is the small 'Y' looking piece that holds the shift fork in place.
