accelerator pedal

when i was installing my dual carbs, for some reason I had a problem with the accelerator pedal .

After screwing with the pedal, the ball joint popped off the pedal cluster. As all you that are over 6ft and over 200+lbs(exact number is still classified), it's a SOB to get in there and fool around.

Luckily, I don't have the carpet installed yet, so I removed the foot board and attempted to pop the joint back on. however, it won't stay. it doesn't click in at all. And the accelerator pedal mechanism is kinda 'floppy' - meaning, it doesn't want to stay on the driver's side of the center tunnel. It flops to the right. Is that supposed to be like that?

I probably should rebuild the cluster or buy a rebuilt one, but there's a decent amount of rust down there... i'd hate to not be able to reinstall it (and part with that kind of money).

i was just going through ebay and came across a used accelerator rod - the ad mentioned a C-clip which is supposed to hold the rod onto the cluster. I'll go take a look to see if I can find it on the floor - hope I didn't 'shop-vac'-it up when I took off the board.

look on the pan around the center tunnel area. when you popped it off it just may have fallen. when you get one buy 2. one for the little tin you keep your fuses in.

Since I am getting older and it is getting harder every day to get to that pedal area, I use several large pillows (4 or 5) on the seat area and lay on them. They make a nice cushion especially on the race car as it has a door bar to have to hang over! I'd recommend taking a weekend to pull the pedal cluster and do a full rebuild or replacement. Good luck

The pedal should only swing fore-and-aft. If it flops to the side, the hinge has rusted out and broken. Unbolt the pedal from the floorpan and replace it.

Of course, the hinge being rusted usually means the bolts are very rusted. Lots of penetrating oil and creative swear words are probably required...

does PP sell these clips if I can't find mine? I didn't see any on the parts site.
