Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Everyone,

I just found this board and registered, it appears to be a great forum. Keep these good posts comin'! As for the help, I want to buy a 914 as a first Porsche and don't know where to start looking. Also I need to sell my car in order to have money to buy a 914. It's an 85 Toyota Land Cruiser for $3000. Any ideas on how to sell that fast? When that does get sold, I know I'm looking for a 73 or 74 with a 2.0. I'll get a 1.7 if one shows up but I am really trying to avoid a 1.8. Have read about too many problems with them. Thanks.

I have always thought the rear trunk of a 914 would be almost ideal for delivering pizzas. But you probably shouldn't sell the Land Cruiser to buy a 914 as your only Pizza Transport Vehicle (PTV). Besides, you will need something to drive to the auto parts store when you need parts for your 914.

1.8 litre engines aren't all that bad. The FI system is just different.

Thanks, but I'd have to imagine the 914 gets more than 11mpg(what my car gets now)

True, very true. I get maybe 28 or 29 mpg out of my '73 2.0. Others get less or more.

I guess it would be useless to debate the reliability of a 30 yr. old car to a 18 yr. old car, especially if the 914 bug has already bitten you!

Sorry, I don't even have a clue about how to sell a Land Cruiser.

realize the 1.8 L-jet is "next generation" FI system! used on the 928 and more. read some of the posts about the manifold pressure sensor! i like being able to switch parts between my 914 1.8 and my 81 VW vanagon ;>)

I've got a 73 914 2.0 "silver ghost". bought it in Chicago, 1400.00 that's about all I would pay for a midwest car, if that. Any model other than a 2.0, I'd offer 5.00 or a happy meal or both. As far as the Toyota goes. Your price is right but I would keep it because unless you buy a 914 that has been well kept and running, you will need a second form of transportation. Lost of 9fourteeners in Chicago. Good luck!

put a tow hitch on the land cruiser for down the road when you want to transport your 914 race car on a car trailer! (part of "everybodies" 5 year plan)

914s get great gas mileage... I haven't had to put gas in mine in weeks now... mainly b/c the engine is on my patio :P there's something to be said about a car that is relatively maintenance free for a parts runner/backup to the 914

Adam,

Are you considering a 914 as your only car to be used year-round? If so you should do a search on "rust" in this forum just so you know what you are getting into. 914s are incredibly rust prone and do not last long in the Illinois winter elements. We use more salt here than anywhere else I have seen, and that is bad for an ungalvanized body that also has a few inevitable rust spots.

I wouldn't dare drive my car in the winter any time after the first snow. It goes into forced hibernation once the salt trucks have done their thing just once.... Even if it is a 1.8

My dad used to have 2 914's, unfortunatly one got smashed and the other had a weak engine. So he swapped the engine and made one good 914. I wanted to kill him the day he sold it for his 911. That being said, I am somewhat aware of the rust spots. Thanks for the IL input for the winter.
