Solution for changing spark plugs
I recently purchased a T handled spark plug wrench which has the socket permanetly attached and includes a swivel joint.
No more detatched sockets lost under the tin. I think I paid about $12-14 at Kragens. Ken Schipper |
i found my sparkplug wrench at a vw or porsche swap meet. it is a regular vw tool with a sparkplug socket with a rubber insert to hold the plug on one end and the lug nut wrench on the other. has a small hole for a small breaker bar to turn the spark plug end, i use a screwdriver, and a large hole for the lug wrench. it's about 20 mm long (it is a german tool afterall....) and cost $1.

I just use a standard sparkplug socket, the kind with the rubber insert, along with an extension and a whole bunch of attention. And when I do drop one, one of those long magnet tools works pretty well. Haven't lost one yet... :)

My plug sockets all grab the plug so solidly that they stay on the plug if the fall off the extension. If they stick on the plug, I just grab a needle-nose pliers and yank them off.

Don't laugh, but... duct tape.
Duct tape the spark plug socket to a short 3/8" extension. I have used this "tool" on both 911 and 914 engines and have had no problems. When the duct tape finally wore out after a year I just put on new tape. |
Reason to own a 914
Doesn't the old addage hold true for 914's...The reason to have one is so that you can buy new tools every time you work on it.

I never thread the plugs while stuck in the rubber holder of the socket. I thread them by hand. Also, it seems my socket rides on the sheet metal making the entry a tiny bit crooked. I couldn't use a T handle tool on this car.

It's not duck, duct or _uc_ tape; It's 200 MPH racing tape.

how about the old fuel line trick? cut a piece about 6" stick it over the plug top, and slip it down and spin it also keeps you from stripping the hole...
