Need Help Getting Trunk Assist System..

My ‘73 1.7 was stripped by a previous owner for tracking and there is almost nothing left to hold the trunk lid open and I have never seen another 914 up close so I do not know what I am missing. I have looked in my 914 master manuals and 3 other 914 repair books and find no pictures or write ups on the trunk lid assist system. Can anyone lead me to schematics or pictures so I can search for parts. Used parts would be fine. I just don’t know where to start.

I finally found a site with schematics and part numbers for the whole 914. All is well! 😊

They cut the torsion rods that run across the engine bay firewall. You need to replace them and get them hooked onto the rollers on the hinge arms.

Or you can buy a kit to install gas struts on the sides of the rear trunk. It's obviously aftermarket, but it's a relatively straightforward mod and it does work.

even better get a pair of the Snap-on adjustable hood/trunk holder and paint then bright orange so they won't get lost.

Anyone ever do a prop rod conversion for the rear trunk?

I've seen more than a couple of cut-down ski poles used as prop rods. I don't think any of them were permanently mounted, though.

Install a set of the gas struts on the rear trunk like Dave suggests. To return your car to the stock torsion bar trunk lid mechanism, the engine would likely have to be out. Those things are a biatch to deal with. When we installed the 3.6 in my car, we needed that precious real estate for the intake so we removed the torsion rods and installed the gas struts- very nice install with no issues ever since. :)

Does anyone still make a kit or do you have to create it yourself
