For the trivia buffs:
RECARO = Reuter Carosserie
Reuter build the bodies for the early 356s

IMO the Boxster IS the new 914
Porsche won't put a decent engine in it, 'cause they just know it'll whoop the 996's ass (sound familiar?)
Same politics all over again

They should build a Boxster RS or ClubSport version (=lightweight version, without all the electronic/comfort gadgets)

cheers,

Jeroen

Porsche is owned by no one but Porsche. They are a design firm first, and an automotive company second. Their designs are bought by MANY other automakers around the world which is what gives Porsche the ability to stay independent and make sports cars which further their engineering and design talent. The fact that cars such as the Touareg and Cayenne share platforms is merely to undercut the huge expense of building separate platforms for each company. It's a joint venture and is really no different than Chevy Prizms and Toyota Corollas being siblings but different companies. (No, GM does not own Toyota).

Porsche was also contracted by Harley to help design engines for them as well. Do you think either of them own the other? No.

Yes, VW does own Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and Seat, but NOT PORSCHE.

I hear this all the time and it really sticks in my craw. Just check their company portfolio.

Porsche is also a publicly trade company on the German stock market... so technically, it's owned by the shareholders... But the point is that I don't think they have a parent company... (e.g., Daimler-Chrysler).

and cars are still imitating it... MR2(esp older ones), Fiero(not a good imitation), Del sol(front engine copy) etc pull styling cues from the 914... which is why it is such a great car to own..

How can you not think that they 986 is a modern 914? They both are convertibles, both have a mid-engine, both are seriously underpowered compaired to the 911 of there era, etc.

Still I would take a 914 over a boxter anyday cause everyone in my hometown owns a boxter just to say they own a brand new porsche.

Porsche is a shareholder-held company....just because there are cooperation ventures with other manufacturers does not mean there are ownership ties....e.g. the new Mini, owned by BMW, has an engine produced by a joint venture between BMW and DaimlerChrysler in Brazil, this is pretty common today to share development, costs, etc

Fun fact is that is has been argued that the Cayenne was built as a cooperative venture with VW to increase Porsche shareholder value and protect the company from a hostile buyout......btw...Porsche Design, an Austrian company is a fully separate company with some family ties going way back, but has nothing to do with Porsche AG in Stuttgart...

My two cents.... :-)

I own my 914, because the rest of them lift their pinikies sipping bad wine and eating old cheese - I'm just a barbarian and wolf down anything stuffed into an intestine and suck on fermented grain.

LMAO!

I thought you owned a 914 because you were a cheerleader in highschool!

:)
