replacing stick on mirror

What is up with the after market center mounted replacement mirror? I would love to get one, but I am not sure that they are worth $170. Thats what they keep going for on ebay. where do they come from? Is it a big secret? I bet that they are available for less, for a different model of car, from somewhere else.
Any info?

I was thinking the same thing, I almost bet that they are from a VW van maybe a late model. I am still laughing from these guys paying so much for a mirror. And the guy selling them is laughing all the way to the bank. Not a chance in hell I would ever pay that much for a mirror. Cant see out the stupid thing most of the time anyway.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Sounds like a business opportunity!

If ya put one in your car the women use it to put on makeup and you can't see anything with it anyhow. They keep forgetting about the mirror in the visor - I guess because it isn't lighted.

replacing stick on mirror

I might be wrong, but I don't think 914's were originally equipped with a stick on the mirror. Neither of mine have a stick on the mirror, anyway. If your mirror has a stick on it, maybe it was installed by the PO? Sounds like something a ricer would do; put a stick on the mirror so you can adjust it from that ridiculously reclined position they always have their seats in.

If I were you, I'd remove the stick from the mirror and never look back.

What are you talking about...

This?

If so, this is the very early style 914 interior mirror (small) that is getting harder to find.

Otherwise, can you share a picture of what you are talking about?

Thanks!

There is a guy on Ebay that sells clear plastic sun visors and he also sells a mirror that screws into the top where the visor mounts go that also hold the visors. The bidding starts at $1.00 but it always gets run up way high. Good for him I guess. There are a lot of uninformed people out there that pay outragous amounts for the littlest things.

The new stock mirrors always sell for a bundle on E-Bay. I originally bought an after market mirror for my car at Pep-Boys for around $12. The problem with the aftermarket mirror is that the angle of the shaft dosen't allow you to see out the window properly.

So, when I was out at the wrecking yard, I found a 944 with its mirror in tact. I got it for $2. It's not identicle to the stock 914 but it's almost identicle. The only difference that I can find it that the base of the 914 mirror is square and around 1.5 inches and the 944 base is round and about the size of a nickel. The nice thing about the 944 model is that it has an anti-vibration spring in the base which helps stedy the mirror.

It's not concourse (big deal) but it's Porsche & cheap!

Well mine is stock and in the stock location and I cannot see out of it properly anyway. I actually thought about mounting one on the dash for the right angle. But then that would not be stock.

Tidybuoy 07-31-2003 08:13 PM

I can see perfectly out of the 944 model.

One thing could be how you have it mounted. I believe that the very top of the base needs to be 4" from the top of the window. When I installed my mirror, I marked the outside of the window with a crayon first. This helped.

Can somebody post a pic of the $170 mirror in question?

mike95125 07-31-2003 10:29 PM

Working on it.

here it is.

kellzey 08-01-2003 04:49 AM

I don't know what the hell that is... but I wouldn't pay $170 for it!

Just someone trying to make a lot of $$$$$$$

I've seen it for a while on e-bay and 914club classifieds. I don't think there is a lot of interest.

And the plastic (clear) visor replacements look stupid as well.

Just my opinion, though.

They guy wasnt trying to make a lot of money. He starts his auctions at one cent and it just goes up from there.

Ron Meier 08-01-2003 06:30 AM

Stupidity is it's own reward in the case of eBay.

Dave at Pelican Parts 08-01-2003 07:45 AM

I like the idea! The glue-on mirrors are one of the car's Achilles' heels, after all. But yeah, I wouldn't pay $170 for it...

mike95125 08-01-2003 10:38 AM

I am wondering where he is sourcing these things from. I'll just bet they are some $25 aftermarket for another car that has been pimped up for the afluent 914 PORSCHE community. BS.
His original add read "one of a kind, this is the only one". Now he is on his fifth or so "only one". Hell, the first one I saw went for $202 IIRC. And WTF is up with clear visors?! I like the mirror, but arent clear visors like putting screen doors on a submarine, or solar powered flash lights? I'm a Polock and I dont even find those clever.

End of rant.

Tidybuoy 08-01-2003 11:00 AM

Woodpie,

I don't think anyone means there is a stick on the mirror. There is however, a stick-on mirror.

Toast 08-01-2003 11:03 AM

OK, so i'm not the only one that found those clear visors stupid and pointless. Seems like the clear visors are just for show.....so that you can get people to look at you (and write about you) like you are some kind of idiot.

Visors usualy are not effective for me anyway (shorty), unless they have a mirror, which is usually to small. That is really why they have rearview mirrors for anyway.....Right Ronnie?
