Windsheild seal

I was recently working on my 73 2.o and decided to clean out around the windsheild. As I took off the trim I discovered that the glass was not attached to the car. It was just held in by the (nice clean straight) trim.

Any thoughts about this.

I had my windshield replaced recently and the installer set the glass onto a black adhesive bead around the frame. I don't know if the factory installation was in a rubber gasket or not.

Conrad, you are leaking somewhere. I would have an installer re-set it. They use a 1/4 inch bead of sealer. BE SURE TO REPLACE THE PLASTIC PINS FOR REATTACHING THE CHROME TRIM, BEFORE THE GLASS IS RE-INSTALLED. I watched the installation. Note, the trim is put together and laid in place and then gently pressed to the clips, almost simultaneously. Good luck. Hal

See I was told that it is set into some kid of hot glue or something that takes a couple of days to harden. After that it becomes part of the car rather than just being stuck to it.
Is this right.

Conrad,

The original factory installation used a strip of adhesive that comes in a roll. 3M makes this product now. It works well for the rear window but, I was told by a very sharp windshield guy, is not safe for windshields as it tends to come loose over time, as has happened on your car. The modern way to do it is to use a polyurethane sealer that comes in a caulking tube. This does take a few hours to set, but you can drive the car right away. It is tenacious stuff and has a long life. If done carefully, it leaves a very clean and straight looking seal which is covered by the chrome trim.

For only $112 I got a whole new windshield installed. You could probably get yours reinstalled for about $50, but don't forget to order a complete set of 19 trim clips from Pelican and have them on hand when the windshield is removed.
