Flywheel Seal
I hate to be re-hashing the S. O. S., but sometimes I get paranoid in my inferior abilities.
Anyway, I'm installing my rear main seal on my '74 2.0 L. Does it sit flush with the actual engine case, or does it sit back against the flywheel shims? In other words, is it supposed to be all the way in or all the way out? Thanks a lot guys. A few more brake bleeds and a few more oil seals, and I'm ready to go. |

Check the clutch replacement tech article. It doesn't really say, but I'm sure you only put it in flush with the case. The shims go in behind it. When I changed mine, I'm almost possible the old one was flush and I put the new one in flush as well.

Lover,
First make a check on the flywheel to see if there is any wear along the face where the seal mates with it. If so, you'll want to adjust the depth of the seal into the case so that it has a "virgin" surface to mate with. Even a mm or two can prevent leaks if the mating face is worn some. Pulling it out again to fix a leak is no fun - ask me how I know. Enjoy,
